shared risk?

I have seen it mentioned in the past, but can someone explain a shared risk program to me? What is it and how does it work? Is it something that your dr offers or is it something that another company offers, like a loan or something?

shared risk info

it just depends. some doctors offer refund plans directly and others partner with independent companies who offer the programs. they work like this: you pay the cost for about 2 1/2 cycles (depends on the program) all upfront. if you get pregnant, the doctor or company keeps all your money. but, if you don't get pregnant, you get several more cycles for free. If after all the cycles you are not pregnant, you get some part of your money back. I say the extra cycles are free, but that is not really true. you still usually have to pay $4000 or so for medication and monitoring beyond the cost the refund plan.

My understanding is that generally, if you get into the program (it's not guaranteed), it's a bad deal for you because if they let you in, then statistically you should be able to conceive in 2 cycles -- and the cost is more than that (because of it not covering meds and other stuff). Plus, sometimes they take a lot of your control away, like requiring you to use frozen embryos, etc.

If you are accepted into the program, they are betting you WILL get pregnant based upon their inside information, while you are betting that you WON'T. Who has the advantage?

These programs address an understandable concern: why pay lots money for treatments that don't pan out? But consider where your bigger risk lies. If you pay for treatments and don't conceive you are out the cost of the treatments. If you do conceive, then your costs are much higher for un-reimbursed medical care, lost maternity leave income, new clothing, food, diapers, etc.

Supplemental health insurance coverage for Infertility - ivf, helps you create maternity leave income, and protects you in case of pregnancy complications, delivery complications, premature birth, accidents and illnesses.

Some food for thought. Hope it helps. Good luck!
