Walmart Pharmacy, AAA big drug discounts.

I had 2 MC's last year, discovered I will need blood thinner injections daily. I had a heart attack when I found out how much Lovenox costs ($1200/month), and Heparin is also expensive as far as I'm concerned. Luckily my doc prefers heparin, but my insurance won't cover it at all (a whole other story), it was gonna cost me $250/month . THEN I found out that with my AAA Auto club membership I get a prescription drug discount card. You cannot use it with any other card or in addition to health insurance, it is pretty much only valid for drugs not covered by insurance, and then only generic drugs, BUT in particular it offers savings on some injectable drugs. SO, my heparin will now cost me $35/month, and I can get it at any CVS pharmacy!
Before I found out about the AAA discount, I called around and found that the Walmart Specialty Pharmacy (walmart.com) had the dosage of heparin I need (10,000 units daily) for $118/month, still a large savings. Thus far I am not in need of any other fertility meds, but the Walmart website did list drugs for fertility on the site.

Okay, so I just called Walmart Specialty pharmacy. I priced the most expensive medication that I used for IVF: Gonal F 450 iu pen. Price was more than $600 per pen at Walmart! I used Freedom Fertlity Pharmacy (mail order only), and price per pen was about $400. Huge $200 difference per pen (which you use many) so I am glad that I used Freedom Fertility. I only priced this one med, but for me this one med brought my bill into the thousands of dollars, which would have been AT LEAST $1000 more had I used Walmart. Do your research ladies. IVF is crazy expensive (which we all know) and an extra $1000 on our bill can be avoided.

I only compared the two places. I will have to do some more research. I am only checking the gonal f bc its the most expensive. I'll chime back in when I get more info, will you please do the same?

I just got off the phone with five pharmacies suggested by my clinic. By far Freedom fertilty was the cheapest. Here is the breakdown for a single gonal f 900 unit pen from each place: Freedom ($717), Shraft (1177.46), Braun (1061.85), CVS specialty (1163.61 including out of pocket discount), and Village Fertility (1205.40). I am totally shocked by the HUGE price differences here. If I buy 6 pens, I can save a minimum of $1800 by using Freedom. Hope this helps.

Aunt Sarah

Did u price the gonal-f with the aaa discount or any other fertility meds? I'd like to hear. I wouldn't mind buying a aaa membership.

Thanks

Use your company's flexible spending account to pay for these items. You can lower your fertility drug costs by 1/3 or more.

You use pre-tax, rather than after tax dollars to make payment. You will save on Federal and State income taxes, plus FICA taxes. For example: 25% federal tax bracket, plus 5% state income tax bracket, plus 7.65% FICA taxes totals 38%
