Question IVF in Ohio

Well, I think we are moving on to IVF if this IUI doesn't work. I wanted to start looking ahead and see what info I can find on financing IVF.

What insurance companies cover it and can I just buy a policy from them? I have no clue how to do this with insurance of if you even can.

Thanks for any help!

My insurance does not cover any IF whatsoever and dh and I have paid over $25,000 out of pocket to get our kids. Anyways, when we started this cycle and went back to our RE, they now are offering discounts for self-payers. We had never heard of this. We were thrilled beyond belief when our bill was literally cut in half. I wish we could have been offerred this 6 years ago when we started this whole process.

So if you cannot find an insurance company, look inot clinics that offer discounts. I go to one in Cincinnati, Ohio. It is IRH.

I also go to IRH in Cincinnati. As a self-pay the bill was about $7k-8k with ICSI, and cryopreservation. However, my insurance (Aetna) actually covered my meds, I only had a co-pay for that.

Good Luck!

Hi ksobak,

I am in Ohio too (Columbus). Generally, all insurance companies offer plans that cover infertility. However, it is nearly impossible to buy an individual policy that covers infertility/IVF (from what I understand - that is why so many people pay thousands out of pocket). Personally, I have been extremely lucky to have insurance coverage through my employer.

What you need to find is an employer (not an insurance company) that has a plan that pays for infertility treatment (and IVF specifically). So you "shop" by employer and not insurance provider.

I know that Time Warner, DuPont and JP Morgan Chase all offer infertility benefits (those are the companies that either my husband or I have worked for that offer comprehensive coverage including IVF).

You can read about other companies at www(dot)i_n_c_i_i_d(dot)org although the list isn't perfect. (Remove the _ characters from that URL - this site censors the web address and won't let me type it any other way).

Im from the Cincy area. I work for GE and our insurance just pays for meds and dianostic. It won't even cover IUI's.

Can you buy ins. for IF covarage?

Hi Jessica,

Generally, the answer is no. The only way I've heard of someone buying a policy is when they formed their own business and bought a business policy.

Hi thereI'm in cincy and my DH works for Fidelity-they cover 6 cycles IVF at 80% after $250 deductible and unlimited IUIs.

Also, Dicks sporting goods and christ hospital have IVF coverage.

Hi Jrene-

I just wanted to tell you that my husband also works for GE. Doesn't it just absolutely suck that they don't pay for anything whatsoever? It's just a real shame that they will pay 5K towards adoption and they are even progressive enough to offer same sex benefits, but those of us having fertility problems can't catch a break. Just thought it was odd that I saw you also had to deal with the GE benefits, or lackthereof.
