We were at Barnes and Noble last night and they had sooo many great cookbooks. I LOVE looking through cookbooks. I was checking out the different books fromthe Food Network stars. DH was reading a book called The Bread Bible and I thought of you, Cathy. He said it was really interesting. So what is your tried and true cookbook? I have a Ina Garten cookbook...the Family one and I have lots of pages dog earred for ones I want to make, but I haven't made ay of her recipes yet.

I find the one I use the most is Bittman's How to Cook Everything. This is really my new Joy of Cooking and I use it several times a week. Not everything works, imho, but it's an excellent basic guide.

Bittman's is one of my standards too. Thanks to your recommendations Cathy. I also refer to a bunch of different Weight Watchers cookbooks in my collection. I love the Cake Mix Doctor for desserts. We have a few celebrity cookbooks, but honestly I don't use them that often.

OH! Ina Garten's cookbook is great, if it is the one I'm thinking of. Look for a recipe for oven roasted asparagus. We talk about it often on this board. It is a FABulous way to make asparagus. Between her method and throwing it on the grill, DH & I will never go back to steamed.

Janet, I agree about the asparagus. It's the only way we make it too.
I don't use many cookbooks. I have a ton of those small paperback cookbooks though. Many of my favorite recipes are in those, so I have stacks of dogeared cookbooks on my bakers rack. I try to buy a cookbook everytime we go on vacation too. I look for cookbooks that are specific to the area. It's a fun way to try new things and it's a nice memento of the vacation. I'll have to check out Bittman's.

One of my favorite topics. I love looking through cookbooks. Even though dh forced me to get rid of some when we moved last year, I still have lots of them, most of which I'll admit I hardly use. I really like Junior League and local cookbooks, tend to buy them on vacations as Melinda said. I also pick them up at yardsales and thrift shops. Because everyone knows dh and I like to cook we get at least one for Xmas every year.
The one I use the most is a local one, Bravo!, put out by a local opera company. I know several of the people who contributed recipes and everything I've made from it has been good. I got it as a gift from dh 20 years ago, it was our first Xmas together. Other than that there are a few dishes in the South Beach Diet book I make regularly though I'm not on the diet. I also like The New Basics from the Silver Palate ladies, it's a good basic cookbook.
I love checking them out from the library too. Right now I have Ainsley Harriott's Low-Fat cookbook. I've made two dishes from it so far and they have been very good.
