IVF Canceled --> IUI?
Hi everyone. This is my first post on this site but I have been reading it for almost two years. It amazes me how so many of us are going through fertility issues. I am sending good vibes to everyone who is trying and dealing with this frustrating journey.
My story is no more interesting than anyone's... we did have our first son in Aug 06, then we ttc #2 right away with no luck... now coming up on 2 years of ttc. I had a myomectomy to remove 3 large fibroids in may of 08 and did 3 IUIs last winter. I just started my first IVF cycle in October 08, but it was canceled this morning because I only got about 2 mature eggs (today is cd9). The Dr is going to switch me to an IUI for this weekend, but I have to be honest that I don't have a lot of faith in that. I suppose I will ovulate 2 eggs but it's hard to believe it will work. Does anyone have this same experience?

hi okmama,
i have had 3 canceled IVF that all turned into IUIs. Unfortunately for me, I got BFN on all three cycles. However my RE said there are ppl who have gotten preg from IVF converted to IUI. Is this your first IUI? What is your diagnosis? Good luck to you! |

Why were your cycles canceled? Poor response? Hyperstim? Does hyperstim come from the fsh drugs (follistim) or from the trigger shot (hcg)? I had my IUI this wkd (yest and today) so now we wait. I had about 3 follicles over size 15 so hopefully that gives us better odds. I don't have a ton of faith in IUI though... I'm sorry for your luck too. What are you trying next?

hi okmama-
my cycles were canceled due to poor response. for ivf #4 which i actually went all the way to egg retrieval and egg transfer, i got pregnant but had chemical pregnancy last week. so now i am waiting for my period to come and will be taking a couple of months off before doing another round of ivf. well, don't give up on IUI yet. i heard it does work for for ppl. is this your first IUI? my friend who had PCOS got preg through IUI first try and is now carrying twins. |

Omg - chemical pg is hard. I had one last Nov. But did not go through all of the shots and emotional ups and downs of ivf. I am so sorry. I hope you found out early... no matter what, that is a very difficult experience. Good luck to you with the next round.
I am one big crazy mess... had our first son in aug 06 from good old fashioned trying. Found out I had pretty big fibroids during the pregnancy but managed to get through it ok with no complications. Had to have c-section and they were huge at delivery time. Tried to conceive #2 for 15 months both naturally and then with the help of some femara (letrozole) and iui -- did that 3 times --- and then after a very odd long scary period and a d&c I had a myomectomy to remove the fibroids in May. TTC naturally until Sept and then said ok forget it, let's try IVF. We just tried IVF for the first time this cycle but we didn't respond well to meds so they switched to an IUI. I am slightly more optimistic this time since we did injectibles and then a trigger shot, but then again I am so numb from all of this that it's hard to believe that something would ever work. I'm also a bit overweight (40-50lbs) so I am also blaming myself thinking it's the only reason it hasn't happened for us again. If you're anything like me you are trying to dissect every single thing you've eaten, had acupuncture, given up caffeine, had wheatgrass... etc etc. |

okmama - i am so sorry that you have been through a lot in the past 2 years. i know the feeling of trying and trying and nothing works and you feel hopeless. well, i know that IUI with injectibles and trigger shot have worked for many ppl so don't give up! i know it's hard to think you will ever reached your goal but you have to believe you will. You were able to conceive your first son so be hopeful!
i am still early in my chemical preg. i am waiting to get my period. so far the body has not miscarried itself. feel so weird that i was preg for a week. now i am just going along doing normal stuff. i am just dreading the painful AF. |

Dear okmama,
I am so sorry to hear about your failed cycle. I feel like our stories are so similar. I just had to cancel my IVF on 10/20 b/c I only had two mature eggs as well. I decided to go with the IUI since I felt like I was already this far into it ($$$ - what is another $450), and at least I had two good eggs, but now I am waiting to see. I had a daughter in 2004 (got preg on 1st try), but have been ttc for 2 years. I had a really bad abdominal infection after her birth, so I do have scarring on my tubes (one is now open), so I am hopeful for the IUI. My eggs were on the site with the open tube. We'll see...I so feel your pain. My theory is that if you know you have two good eggs sitting there, and you have already invested in all those meds, you mind as well try to take advantage of it! Good luck. |

Okama, if you have normal sperm, and decent eggs, then there honestly should not be much of a diff between iui/ivf. IVF generally is used to bypass sperm issues, or tube issues, etc. If you are fine in all those areas, you could be one of those lucky ones with iui's. You say that iui's don't work well, that's because most peopel that do it start out there, with little hope to begin with. We have MF, sperm is zero percent morphologically correct. We did our 4 iui's. But obviouisly no pgcy. So we did ivf for that.
If your issues are primarily uterine (the fibroids, etc) and not related to fertilizing eggs, then IUI sounds good. Go for it. Its a bit more effective then natural. Good luck!!!
