# of embryos to transfer - need advice! (mc ment)

So, I just had my first IVF last month, which resulted in a very short-lived (2 week) pregnancy and I am in-between treatments right now. Under the recommendation of my RE, I only transferred 1 embryo (which obviously implanted, if only for a short time). Now I'm debating whether or not to transfer 1 or 2 next time. My inclination is to do 2, but my RE said that for someone as petite as me (5'2, 112 lbs) the chances of an early delivery are very high. I'm looking for any advice or experiences that anyone can share!

I wish I had more experience to share with you. I had my consult for IVF two weeks ago cause we are starting in May. I am not as petite but I am smaller in stature (5' 6 and 125lbs). They said that age effects their decision as well.
Being 25 they said they would transfer NO MORE THAN 2!! But also no LESS THAN 2.

Good luck

Thanks, jeppy! I'll turn 29 in June, so I also fall into the "young" catgory as far as IVF goes. I'm really leaning toward transferring 2 next time.

Good luck with your cycle! Will this be your first one? I'll be starting my 2nd cycle around mid-April.

I am 39 (obviously at the "older" end of the scale). I have had 5 IVF attempts and always transferred two (on one occassion I convinced my dr to transfer three). Still no pg however. I believe that it is standard practise to only transfer one for younger women as their chances of success are much higher than 35yrs +. It is even higher if the embryo is taken to blastocyst stage (if that is the case I would definitely stay with one only). Good luck.

katiebug- This will be my first cycle. I should start stims early May. If you are starting up again around that time you should join the May Flowers on the IVF board. There are quite a few of us already so best wishes!

It all depends on your age, your previous response to stims, egg quality, etc. I'm 41 and make 12 follicles a month pretty consistently. I put in 6 embies last month (all good quality, 4 to 9 cells)..and the doctor thinks I had an early implantation and then failure (chemical).

For the money you are spending on IVF, why not put in 3 or 4? Calculate the probability each embie has of making it given your age and other criteria...and then make a decision based on that? If each of your embies has a 25% change of making it, I would personally put in at LEAST 4. But that is me...and I'm fine with twins or selective reduction. It's all a very personal decision and what works for me and others may not work for you at all.

Hi,
I'm 5'2, 105lbs and had 3 embryoes transferred. I'm in my early 30's. Why not put 2 or 3 to maximise your chances. If you froze the remaining, they may not survive the thawing process.

Thanks to you all for your input! It really helps to get the opinion of others in the same boat as me. I think I'll probably opt to transfer 2 next time. Best of luck to you all!

But you lose embryos that would have otherwise made it if you take them to the day 5 stage. Those embies do BEST in the uterus. What is leftover has a better chance "statistically" of implanting, but what you lost also may have had a very good chance of implanting.

One really ought to look at the "probability of a normal embie", and the "probability of a live birth at each age" and then use the overall probability of a live birth given those two factors to determine how many to put back in. If you do significantly less than this "overall probability" your chances of success are significantly lower.
