Maybe going ED route, question about screening

Hey all,

After a MC using ivf, the wife and I are considering ED. Our only concern is the screening process, particularly for mental disorders. How do they go about screening donors for history of mental disease in their family? Cant the donor just lie? Im sure this is a common question most of you had/have, how was your mind put at ease regarding this issue? Thanks.

Donor 1502 Level 1
Hi,

I was an egg donor three times. My clinic had me meet with a psychologist and take the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Test. My interview with the psych was a long one and she asked me a lot of questions that I'm pretty sure my recipients wouldn't have cared much about. I think she was checking to make sure I didn't have signs of mental illness.

As far as a family history, yes, you're going to have to rely on your donor to be honest.

I know the ED route is a huge decision, and scary because you have to rely on others to be honest. Not to mention the $$ factor! Thankfully we found a full refund package through Shady Grove in MD. It has already paid for itself as we've had 1 cancelled and 3 failed cycles!

DH and I met with the same counselor that screens donors for the clinic we use. She talked to us extensively about the screening process and how they have techniques in the process that help determine motive and honesty. Of course, there is a chance of dishonesty and some just don't know family history, so there is some risk there. But having been through this several times now - 4 different donors...and reviewed a ton of profiles (our clinic's profiles are about 14 pages long) I can say that people seemed to be very honest in there profiles, even with family or personal history....things that would have been hard for me to reveal.

I've said this to alot of people and they all say it rings true...if/when you start the process...you will just KNOW who is the right one for you. At first, it will seem overwhelming, then you will narrow down to a few candidates, and then somehow, you just know who it should be.

Good luck in your decision process. It's not easy at first, but in the end, it's a completely renewed and welcomed hope after so much loss.
