Question Young, Contemplating Donor Eggs

I'm a 26 year old extremely healthy female that has just been diagnosed with premature ovarian failure. My RE gave me the DE speech and I'm just wondering if there's anyone out there that is around my age that went the DE route and what your experience has been. Everyone on the POF board keeps encouraging me to press forward with my own eggs but I don't think odds aren't in my favor and we're paying out of pocket so I need to determine how much debt I'm willing to put my young family through. Thoughts, suggestions, inspirational stories?

While I am not as young as you, 34 tomorrow, I have been struggling with infertility for 4 years. My husband and I started TTC when I was 30, and I got pregnant twice, and had two early miscarriages during our first year of TTC. After my second m/c I went to the dr. and my FSH was 22 so she sent me to an RE, he dx me with POF. He told me my chances were slim getting PG with my own eggs, but I wanted to try. We tried to do two IUI cycles and both got cancelled because I had NO response to the medications. So IVF with my own eggs wasn't an option since my ovaries couldn't be stimulated. So we are going the DE route, I am currently doing my first (and I pray only) DE cycle. I wish I went to DE sooner, but for me, I needed to know that my eggs/ovaries weren't functioning.....Its a tough choice to make, Good luck!!

Hi Mandy,
Although I am 34 now and using DE, I was told I needed to go this route at 29. I wasn't ready to believe it back then and went though 4 1/2 years of treatment with 3 different REs--3 iuis; 6 ivf attempts. I only had a BFP once (and that was my last ivf attempt with my own eggs which was a chemical). I would definitely not have been able to go through all of that if I didn't have insurance if I used my own eggs. I do not have any insurance coverage for DE. I am now relieved to be moving onto DE after having gone through all of these years of heartache. I know, however, I would have definitely come to this realization sooner if I hadn't had any insurance coverage. It is such a tough decision when faced with this at any age, but I think especially when you are so young. I highly recommend going to another RE to get a second opinion and have your fsh, etc retested for peace of mind. I know I needed to also know how my body would respond to stims before I could make this decision. At any rate, I wish you the best in this difficult decision.

Mandy- I'm not sure if this will help since my situation is different but here goes. I'm 43 and have been ttc for 6 years. We went through 5 IUIs last year with no luck. My FSH and AMH are both very good and there is no reason found for me not to get pregnant except AMA. That being said we chose to skip IVF and go straight to DE/IVF because we wanted the best odds possible. We are paying all out of pocket too and I wasn't as concerned with my DNA as I am with having a child. HTH

Hope
