First IUI with Donor Sperm

I am about to have my first IUI within the next couple weeks here. I am nervous.. I honestly dont know exactly what to expect.

A little background on My DH and myself- we are both 26. We have been ttc for about a year and a half. we were able to get pregnant 3 times on our own. Sadly all of those pregnancys resulted in miscarriage. I have a mild form of PCOS. I have done 3 rounds of clomid (50 mg) and now i am about to start 100 mg of clomid followed by the trigger shot for the Donor IUI.

Due to a illness my husband has severe Male Factor. This has come up more so in the past 6 months since he has been on medications which has pretty much depleted his sperm count.

We were told we could try ICSI. but for different reasons we felt we could not do this.

My dh came to me about a month ago and asked me if i would consider using donor sperm. He said that he had done a lot of thinking and he has come to the conclusion that he did not want to pass on his genetic disorder to any of our children or grandchildren. (most of his family also has this disorder or a similar disorder that would be in the same "family". He told me he could love any baby and it would be his. My dh is a great guy.

After lots of talking and praying we decided this would be the best route for us to go. We chose a donor and purchased 4 vials from CCB.

I am so nervous... we honestly cannot afford to keep doing this. two thousand dollars was a lot of money to us.. We have 4 vials.. for 2 IUI's. I dont know what we will do if 2 IUI's do not work. I have had many people tell me not to worry about timing.. that i am young. I know that 26 is young. I cant seem to shake off this feeling that its now or never for us. I have this need to be a mommy. My 3 miscarriages really did me in. I truly dont feel whole anymore

I have been a nanny since i was about 16.. helping to raise other peoples kids. I adore children. I love babies.. The thought of my not having that experience kills me.

Any words of encouragement would be much appreciated.

My DH and I have a DD from donor sperm. Just keep thinking about your child - which you WILL have!

And yes - your DH is a great guy!

If you have any questions - feel free to PM me.

I wouldn't waste two vials on one IUI . I never did and I have four kids to show for it. Just do one IUI 36-40 hours after your HCG shot and you should have good timing . I hope your clinic taught you how to administer the injection yourself so doing it in the evening isn't an issue (or you have friends or family that can do it for you), I think that's why so many clinics insist on doing the IUIs 24 hours after the HCG .

Child ment'd

I agree - if you have limited supply of sperm, I would do single IUI cycles. My DS is a product of a DS (also from CCB) IUI done about 36 hours after trigger. Good luck!!!

Thanks guys.. i thought about what you said about only using 1 vial per IUI and i did some research. I was surprised to find that there is not much more of a success rate for 2 IUI's per cycle versus 1 IUI per cycle. Its pretty much the same. So i talked to DH about it and we have decided to go with your advice and use 1 Vial per IUI. so we will be able to do 4 IUI's instead of only 2. And if the 4 IUI's do not work.. (god forbid) We will figure out what to do then.. but at least we have 4 months and not just 2!!

I was going to recommend the same- one vial per month. We used donor sperm and have two children. We did 6 cycles before getting pg with the first and then with our second we got preg the first cycle- it ended up a chemical pg and then got pg the next cycle again with our son! Our inseminations were 36 hours post HCG.

Good luck!

My diui's were also all one.... if you want to improve timing, get a midcycle ultrasound and then the hcg shot. All my IUI's were 35 hours after hcg and I got pregnant on my first, third, fifth and seventh tries. I know it seems like alot of money.... but it will be so worth it. We ended up spending over $30,000 out of pocket(gulp!) over a 2 1/2 year timeframe, but after getting our miracle, I would have spent every penny we ever had for her. Good luck.

this cycle will be monitored! I am doing 100 mg of clomid with blood tests and ultrasounds along the way. and the HCG trigger shot. So hopefully it will be well timed! Thank you all again for your support!!
