Legal issues with known sperm donor? (Ontario, Canada)

Hello all,

I'm new to this site and trying to figure something out. I live in Ontario Canada and I'm trying to figure out the legal side of known donor sperm.

We have a friend who has so generously agreed to be the sperm donor for us. I know that if we went with a sperm bank then my husband's name would just go on the birth certificate and he's legally the child's father. Does it work the same way for known donors with no medical involvement (ie...home insemination)? Or would my husband have to adopt the child?

Thanks for your input,
April.

April- I don't know but I would highly recommend contacting a lawyer who specializes in adoption and/or donor gametes. I know the laws and restrictions around donor gametes in Canada are much stricter than in the US. I would think at the very least I would have the donor sign a legal document terminating any parental rights. You just wouldn't want things to get ugly in the future. GL
