Hey, I've been trying to find out how long frozen donor sperm will live after an IUI. Does anyone know? Or what does your RE think? I've heard anywhere from 6 hrs to 2 or 3 days (that seems really long, but I wish!) So is there any kind of consensus? Everywhere I look says something different...

I have heard that frozen sperm lives about 12 hrs average but my Dr. says that it can live for up to 24 hrs. I think it all depends on each donor and situation but i think 12hrs is the average but who really knows. I really hope my donor sperm can live longer than 12 hrs because my Dr. always wants to do my IUI the morning before i ovulate which is usually between 7pm - 7am. Dr. usually does my IUI at like 10:00am so if the sperm only live 12 hrs then that only gives me until 10:00pm that night and what if my eggs don't release until after that. I heard that the egg lives 24 hrs so i was thinking of trying to get Dr. to do the IUI in the evening (which they say they don't do) or the morning after I ovulate. Anyways, good luck with your cycle. I hope you can figure out the best timming to release your swimmers.

Yeah, I was hoping they lived longer. I'm just really paranoid about the whole timing thing. I've been using a few OPK and the one I've been "going by" is the clear blue easy digital one. So when I go a + on that, I called my RE and came in the next day for the IUI. However, the little cheap strips that I've been using a few times a day just to make sure I didn't "miss" it were not as dark as what they were the NEXT day. (the day I had my IUI) sooo... not sure if I jumped the gun, but the clearblue said pos, and thats what my RE likes... so I'm just hoping...
Good luck to you! |

Frozen sperm live 12-24 hours. I spoke to one of the embryologists at my clinic who said in a petri dish he has seem them live a little longer (up to 2 days) but the usual is 12-24 hours. That's why I think timing is so crutial and I hate OPKs - too much guess work. Skip the OPKs and go straight for the trigger shot (it gives you much more control). You should ovulate 36-38 hours after trigger (this is a well known fact and is how they time it for IVF - they trigger you and go in and retrieve the eggs at about 35.5 to 36 hours - allowing the trigger shot to help the eggs mature (your LH surge has a similar effect) and then retrieving them right before they would release). That way you can time the IUI's better and not second guess those stupid OPK lines.

yeah, this is my first month ever using the OPK's... and I'm already starting to dislike them... grrr...
My RE wanted to try me on a few cycles completely natural though, since I don't seem to have any fertility issues myself. (DH has zero sperm) So if after a few BFN cycles, I will def ask to be a little more agressive... |

Regarding the clear blue digital monitor....
I used my digital monitor along with the regular opk sticks the month I did DIUI just to make sure we were right on the head with timing. The OPK picked up the + a day before the Digital monitor did. I debated what to do, I knew the digital would put up the surge the next day...but I didn't want it to be too late. We ended up going with the +OPK just to make sure...I figured better earlier than that too late! We must have nailed it right on the head! We are due 12/10. |

Hey Mindy, thanks for sharing! I wasn't using the digital monitor, just the digital OPK test, and got at positive on THAT before I got the definite positive on the cheap strips, lol. So I went with the earlier one as well. I'd rather be too early than too late I guess as well, and sooo glad it worked for you! Congrats!! Makes me feel better that I wasn't TOO early... I'm hoping
