Meds and questions

We saw the new RE last week and she seemed nice. An aside: We were in an office and on the table was a used capped tb syringe and vial from some drug- she never addressed it or removed it. I thought this was weird and we were both uncomfortable. Was that a test? Or what? But I digress.... My question is I kept asking what drugs would they be using on me and she kept insisting I use their pharmacy. I explained I would like to check with my insurance BC/BS and Tricare and see what they will cover or not and then I would like to deal directly with the company especially if it isn't covered. Anybody else feel like there was an inside deal going on at their doctors or something. I have my own compounding pharmacy that I am comfortable with, but she would never list the drugs. Should I insist or just give up the fight?

That's pretty odd. I've been through several RE practices over the last few years and while they may have a preferred pharmacy, none really cared if I said "Please fill the script through so-and-so place." Definitely stick to your guns, especially if you're comfortable with your existing pharmacy.

Regarding the syringe/meds on the table...it's a bit creepy, and inappropriate to boot during a first-time consult. Maybe she was just really busy that day and forgot to put those items away from a previous consult!

Take care, and good luck.

Did you ask about that vial and syringe? I am too curious a cat not too Anyway, I agree she may have forgotten it from a previous consultation.

My RE has a preference in terms of pharmacy. I have read some weird stuff about the drugs not being kosher or not even what they claimed to be; so it's important you find one the RE trusts and that you trust. Personally, I asked why that pharmacy and got an acceptable answer; I will use the one he suggested even if it means more money. Did you ask your RE why and discuss your pharmacy with her?

I wouldn't say you have to put up a fight, but I would have an interview with her to clarify certain points.

Good luck,

CS

Well, I think the syringe and vial is sort of gross, though maybe it was saline from a teaching or something.

I never really had a problem with using my pharmacies and I definitely would check with my insurance. No way would I drop $4K on meds if I didn't have to. I do have to get these gross estrogen 'candies'(trioches) for the DE cycle that are made across the street from the RE office, but they aren't expensive by any means. my estrogen patches I'm already starting to hoard as I can only get one a month under insurance. And I have some trioches leftover from my mock that should still be "good".

I'm sure there's some sort of deal going on, but it's probably legal, just she prefers a certain pharmacy. Also, if the nurse's are always going to be calling it in over there and you'll be constantly correcting them, then if the insurance is fine either way, go ahead and use the one she likes.

So yeah, annoying, not worth major fighting, but definitely worth checking around a little.

The syringe is just gross, not to mention that it's unsafe!! I would definitely address that with them next time you speak with a nurse/RE. I would also be a little leery if they're that careless about other sanity issues?

As for the meds, I would insist on them giving me the list of meds. There is NO excuse for them to force you to go through their pharmacy. Unless of course they're getting a cut of the profits!? They can tell you that they prefer you to use a certain pharmacy, but they can't force you. If they insist, I would find a new RE. You can save yourself a TON of money by doing some shopping around & doing some price comparisons!
