Sort of OT, but not really

Is ADD/ADHD hereditary?

One of the donors I'm looking at states her dad is ADD/ADHD and I wonder if she is too. Her writing seems jittery, she states that being late really upsets her and makes her nervous, and that other people moving her stuff can really upset her.

All 4 of the ones I'm currently looking at seem pretty decent though. I just wondered if DH and I picked this one when we look together this weekend if it's something we'd watch for extra closely in our children.

I don't think it's a dealbuster, just something I want to have in mind.

Happy Friday everyone!

Emily

I believe it is. I have a friend from high school and it runs in her family with the boys. And 2 of her kids have the ADD/HDD. I wouldn't go with that. She said that the men in the family STILL have to take medication as adults and when they go off of it on the week-ends they are wild. For me I wouldn't want that in a donor. But if you have it in your family it may not be a big deal. It's also treatable. So you have to decide.

Thanks Mav,

It definitely takes a few points off her score in my head, but like you said, it's treatable.

We have a friend that really struggles with it, trouble in college and all that.

It would be a dealbreaker for me.

It's a dealbreaker for me as well. I have a friend who has kids with ADD/ADHD and it's not pretty.

It is not known if it is hereditary or not. I wouldn't take the risk.

Here is a good resource for medical info: http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/adhd/DS00275
