ICSI or let mother nature take care if it?

My donor is 25 and there is no problem with sperm, would you do ICSI or would you let mother nature takes her own course?

My RE does ICSI on ALL DE cycles. You never know when the egg's shell might be too hard to penetrate the egg, preventing good fertilization rates.

Personally, I would absolutely do it. It's worth the little bit extra that it would cost to know that all of your eggs have a really good chance at fertilizing!! We had no known MF issues when we did our 1st cycle & had terrible fert report & were only able to proceed with our cycle thanks to rescue ICSI.

Good luck!

BC-Donor,

We also said the RE that in case they didn't work, then do ICSI resue, let's hope for the best.

What is your opinion for assisted hatching, would you use it too?

I think ICSI was done on all our donor eggs too? But you know ICSI does not guarantee fertilization... you would think that putting the sperm in the egg would do it... but not necessarily. On one of my own IVF cycles I had like 11 eggs and I asked that they ICSI half and the other half just let them do their thing in the dish naturally. The fertilization rates were the same for both groups but the ICSI'd group had more develped embryos on day 3... like 8-16 cells... rather than just 8 cells.

The RE business is very competitive and they must report their success rates to the CDC. ICSI ensures that there is maximum fertilization and AH helps with implantation. Their goal is the same as ours to maximize the chance for pregnancy, but they get the money and we have to pay the MONEY. AH was only $500.00 at my RE and ICSI 1k so for us the cost was worth the increased chance.

I have never had to do IVF (did IUIs) but if it were me and there were no issues with fertilization I wouldn't mess with mother nature anymore by doing ICSI. The REs make a nice profit off it, of course.

The embryologist at our clinic was more inclined NOT to use ICSI unless it was a case of male factor. She was conservative and leaned towards letting nature take it's course. Her logic was that if the sperm and the egg do not fertilize naturally in the dish maybe they are not supposed to... perhaps there is a defect in the sperm... or the egg... and if they try to manipulate the sperm and egg it could have some unknown consequencs. And no one knows the effects of children born of ICSI compared to children born regular IVF or naturally. Just a thought.
