Finally some good news
Hello!
Whew! I'm happy to report that my DH and I have made the decision to proceed with IUI using donor sperm. We've been struggling all summer as to what route to take next....we've done a lot of reading and researching. Yesterday we met with our priest and discussed the issue with him. He told us that using DS is okay and is supportive of this! My dh and I were both shocked-I don't think we really knew what to expect. We need to save a bit more money until we can finally begin the procedure...we hope to begin in Feb/March. We are so excited that we've made the decision and are moving forward on our journey to having a family. I have info on cryobanks so we are going to begin the search for a donor. Thank you all for your support you've given over the last few months Gina

Thats wonderful to hear. We too are a Catholic family and kind of wondered what the churches view was on the subject. DH and I have been considering using DS as well. DH has a very low count. We have been trying with IUI's but it hasnt been working. I am interested in hearing more of what your priest had to say about it, if you dont mind sharing. I have been concerned that the church would see it almost like an affair. It seems silly though, seeing as you never even meet the person... =)

Hi Infertile Frog,
Thanks so much for your reply! Our priest said that the Catholic Church does not have an official stance on donor insemination. He said since we are a married couple and are practicing Catholics who tried to conceive naturally but were unsuccessful he has no problem with us using donor sperm. We specifically asked, "Would we go to hell if we use donor sperm?" He smiled and said "Absolutely not." In fact our priest has baptized a few babies who were conceived using DS. He was supportive and said the most important thing is being good parents and raising a child with good morals and Christian values. Even though we are unable to use IVF since my DH has no sperm, we were curious about the church's position on IVF. He did specify that the church’s stance on IVF is not the same as donor sperm. The church believes that since embryos are discarded or have no chance of survival if implanted all at once is considered a form of abortion and thus not morally acceptable. We don’t agree with everything the church says but you had asked for what he had said. Our opinion for what its worth, and not to offend anyone, is that you need to do what you and your spouse feel comfortable doing and fit into your morals and values. I hope that helped and you and your dh are able to soon have the family you want.

Gina,
Congratulations on coming to that decision. It always feels really good once you've got a plan in place! Now you have something to look forward to & not just the hopes that it will happen!! I hope that with the upcoming holidays that the time passes quickly & that before you know it, it'll be time for your cycle!!
