Question Would appreciate your opinion

I just got back from the dr and would like to get some input. First I should share my situation:
Me 25, have PCOS, on Metformin, had HSG and nothing abnormal was found
DH 30, has CBAVD
Due to DH's condition, have done 3 DIUI's with no meds (each cycle I produced 1 egg) all BFN, went in today for u/s and they didn't find any eggs, so I'm skipping this month and will go in next month on cd 14.
Here's my question, my Dr said that they wouldn't do anything with meds or more tests until after the 6th BFN IUI. Is that normal? That seems like quite a few tries, especially considering I didn't produce any eggs this month. (I should add that even before being put on the Met I had regular cycles)
I appreciate any words of wisdom, I'm not the most patient person out there, but I want to make sure that I'm doing the right thing.

Thanks for your help!

Sorry to hear of your bfns. I think 6 failed non med IUIs is excessive. I would ask them if they would consider doing meds sooner or seek another opinion. When I started doing IUIs with DS I only did one cycle with just clomid then my RE started me on injectables. After 5 total we went to ivfs.

Good luck to you!

My 1st DIUI was a natural cycle without meds. I went back for my second and I did not have any follicles - so my RE put me on clomid for the next cycle. I agree with 50/50 that it is excessive.

I think your RE should do what you want to do, not what he wants to do. If you want to be more aggressive with your treatment, then you should be allowed to. I would consider another RE if possible.

IMO-I would seek a second opinion or tell your RE the number of tries that YOU and DH think is appropriate. Be your own advocate and GL!!

Thank you for all your responses. I was thinking along the same lines, but I wanted to make sure that I wasn't just being impatient. I think I will give the Dr's office a call and see what they say. I've already been thinking about switching because of the problems that I've run into with scheduling and communication.

Thanks again for your help!

He is probably thinking that statistically with your age, normal healthy couples can take 6-12 months to concieve. Adding meds, would put you at risk for multiples. BUT>>>>>>>> you are paying for the sperm and IUI"s... so I would be like you, ok, we have done enough, time to up things a bit here. Clomid 50mg with ultrasound monitoring, hcg shot and IUI would not be a huge risk. good luck.

MMI-
That's exactly what I think the Dr's thinking and exactly what I'm thinking. Considering I have PCOS, I have been doing u/s to determine the timing of the IUI's as well as the hcg shot, so I would think that adding a low dose of meds would be ok b/c I'm being monitored now anyways. Or, maybe there's another test that I haven't done that should.
I'm just glad that I'm not way out in left field and that it sounds like I'm not being too unreasonable.
Thanks!

Ok, my first question is, are you seeing an RE or are you seeing your OB/GYN?? That doesn't sound like an RE talking. Regardless of who you're seeing, my opinion, RUN, don't walk, RUN to the next RE & get a different opinion. I've never heard of anyone being told that they need to wait until they've had 6 failed IUI's before doing anything else. Sorry, but that sounds like someone who isn't really knowledgable in infertility issues. I used to work for 3 OB/GYN's & 2 of them dabbled in IF- pretty much a joke, because although they were excellent OB/GYN's, they were just that, OB/GYN's, not RE's!! They spent too much time, in my opinion, wasting precious time for people who really needed more serious help.

I hope I'm not sounding wenchy, but please, don't do another thing with this doctor & seek another opinion, from an RE. (or a 2nd RE, if you're already seeing one)

Please let us know if we can help you in any other way!!

Karen
