Supagurl - I'm not sure where you live, but the best place to start would likely be a well-known clinic in your area. While I haven't donated any eggs, I have been through 2 rounds of IVF so I can tell you what the process is like. We may also move onto donor eggs in the next 6 months, so I want to thank you for even considering this as something that you want to do.
In truth, no one really knows the "risks" of the meds taken to produce more than one follicle. That being said, if you only do one or two cycle the likelihood of any long-term effects is very low (IMHO...but I'm am NOT a medical expert). You will first be subjected to a series of tests to determine your relative reproductive health i.e. Blood tests, ultrasounds, family history, etc. Once you have the OK and are matched with a recipient, the process usually takes about 6 weeks. It starts with birth control pills for 2 - 3 weeks, then lupron is added. The clinic will give you an estimated "Day 0" on which you will go in for blood and ultrasound. If all is OK, you will be advised to start your "stims" (more meds). At this point, you will be closely monitored to determine the amount of follicles (potential eggs) and their size. This part typically lasts for 8 - 12 days. Once the follicles reach a certain size, the clinic will advise you to take a trigger shot and 36 hours later you will go in for retrieval. US clinic seem to use an anaesthetic for this procedure...us "lucky" Canadians walk in with our "eyes wide open". However, even awake - with a "local" - it's not really painful and it's all over in about 15 or 20 minutes. Most women are able to go to work the next day. As a donor, it would be all over at this point. Hyperstimuation is always a risk...it happens when women respond too well to the meds. However, if you are going to a good clinic, close monitoring should certainly minimize this risk. I hope that this is the type of info. you were looking for. If you contact a clinic in your area, I'm sure that they will be able to give you much more info. Bless you for thinking of doing this... Esther
