hey everyone. we went for our DIUI consult yesterday. The Dr. was really nice & warm. He did recommend we do an "HSG" before the Diui, just to make sure my tubes are clear. Is this commonplace? He recommended several natural cycles & thinks we will be successful that way b/c I do not have fertility issues. I hope he's right.
I have heard mixed comments about the HSG procedure. The nurse coordinator said it will feel like really bad AF cramps, but others say it doesn't really hurt. Opinions please???? Or ideas for getting thru it, if it is painful....Thanks so much!

Yes, I believe it is pretty common to do this. I had it done before I attempted DIUI. It's probably good to see if your tubes are clear, otherwise it would be sort of a waste of doing inseminations when they are blocked.
I did not find it painful at all, but I have heard others say that it was awful. Good luck! |

HSG's... I have had 3 I think. There is NO POINT in doing an IUI if you do not know if you tubes are open. The IUI will do NO GOOD if you have not had an HSG within 6 months. Yes, you could have had a CLEAR HSG 6 months ago and then 1 or both tubes close up for no reason. That is why HSG are often repeated every 6-9 months. If you don't have an HSG, and your tubes are closed, the IUI will be for nothing. I think how much cramping you have depends on you, and also what they use to do the HSG. I had 1 HSG done at a university hospital and another done at a hospital near a fertility clinic and they used different instruments and 1 was like bad AF cramps for like 1 minute and the other was very mild cramp for like 1 minute. You take Aleve before and after. Some people feel nothing, others feel something...everyone is different. I would HIGHLY recommend getting an HSG. It also improves your chances because the saline blows out the tubes opening them more.

Yes, you should have it done. It also increases your odds of pregnancy for 3-6 months after. Take motrin before hand and try to relax. Over in seconds. good luck.

The RE said they use Iodine, not saline.....so they can see the liquid on the x-ray. I hope I heard correctly.
Thanks for all of your input! take care.

I've had two, one just before I got pg w/ my second baby. Just so you know, I think the pain involved varies quite a bit person to person. I felt like I had been on the rack afterwards - like AF but much more severe. But my cervix has a weird tilt to it, and can be difficult for technicians to figure out, so there was a bit of a struggle to get started. (The BIZZARRE things one learns through yrs of IF treatments!)

Oh, yea it could be iodine they use. If your RE knows the shape of your uterus (my RE knows mine is retroverted and has a curled tip at the end and a Wallace catheter just doesn't do for IUI's) then they perhaps can adjust what type of instruments they use. Every bodys' BODY is different. If you can get through AF, it is not that bad because the HSG is a relatively short procedure so it's not gonna last long.

I had an hsg as part of my initial work up. But when it came ttc#2...i refused! IT was the worse thing I have ever done!
I didnt have another hsg this time either.....I would have it done if you have never had one! But as for more then one...absolutely NOT! I have to pay for them, so forget it! Ask for some pain killers just in case! Motrin didnt cut it for me, and btw my tubes were clear, i just reacted strongly to the die! Good luck! Tracy |

This is routine test and it actually very important to preform. I think I was in your feeling about the issure - gosh we have spent so much $$ and now another test! Well my DR insist to take the test and I was so glad I did. I have closed tube on my left side. So we would have simply been wasting our money each time I ovulated on the left side. It is always nice to know that the problem exist because you generally ovulate left/right left/right but sometimes that is not the case.
The test is not that awful - I had a slight discomfort during the procedure and then simply felt bloated after the procedure. I do not feel it is the worst thing in the world. As I told my husband when he had to have the testicular biobsy - suck it up - it is after all to achieve our dreams! He said the same thing to me and then added - you did not have to get cut on so stop being a candy butt! You will do great and I know that you will be happy to have the results - we always fear the unknown but once we learn it is generally not as bad as we imagined. Good Luck |

I had an HSG done before we started IUIs for our first child. It was quite painful, one of the most painful moments I've ever had in my life. Thankfully the pain only lasted about 3 minutes or so. The thing that hurts is when they put the catheter through your cervix and into your uterus and then they inflate a balloon to keep it in place. That makes your uterus cramp up (or maybe it was the cervix cramping?). It hurt like the worst menstrual cramp you can imagine. I was alone and really wished I'd had someone's hand to dig my nails into! It doesn't feel like this for everyone, though. I would take 800mg of Motrin an hour before the test (My OB/GYN actually gave me a scrip for a couple of them). I went right back to work afterwards and didn't have any other pain or discomfort. Just those few moments during the test
