Is this bad???

DH and I were told by our RE that our donor would be ready to for retrieval on Wednesday. We got a call from the IVF coordinator and she said our donor is ready and the retrieval will be Monday morning!!!!!! DH has not gone in for his back-up to freeze just in case. We were supposed to go in Monday to finish some paperwork and all of that. Is it normal protocol to have a back up sample? What if something goes wrong and we needed it??? Can you tell I am a little anxious Any advice or past experience would be greatly appreciated.

P.S. Why would they decide to push things up anyway?

Aww.....don't worry!! Your donor just responded a little faster than they thought & they need to retrieve the eggs a few days sooner. Not a big deal!! Yes, I've seen it happen before. I've also seen gals be pushed back a few days because they didn't respond as fast as planned. No harm in doing it either way!!

As for the back up, we've never used one before & I don't think it's a standard protocol, unless there's a reason for it. I know that you can request to have a back up, but it's not standard. I'm sure things will be just fine!!

Hang in there & don't forget to come back & let us know how many eggs you get!!!

Karen

We never had a back up sample, so don't worry. I'm sure your DH will be fine.

The same thing happened to us with the donor. You're trying to plan days off, etc and then the schedule changes. It's great news that she's going to retrieval and has produced some good follicles!

Good Luck, let us know how it goes.

WE have had "back up" frozen samples of DH's for most every IVF that we have done... and that's a LOT of IVF's. We have NEVER had to use a "back up sample". As I understand it you only need a few sperm in the dish and ONE sperm to fertilize each egg!!! Don't worry....

I've had two RE's and neither asked for a backup. It would make sense to have one if your husband's sperm count was low or if he anticipated some problem with being able to "perform" and provide a sample, but I don't think it is standard procedure.

Good luck! Hope you gets lots of eggs and great fertilization results!
