What's a good first sewing machine for an interested 10 year old?

DD has been taking a monthly sewing class for a couple of years. She really likes it. Her birthday is in two weeks and she wants a machine. The store where we go only sells Pfaff. It's really expensive. I want something good but don't want to spend a ton yet. She can get something better in a few years if she sticks with this.

    Thanks!
    Lynn

My parents gave me mine years ago and it is a basic Kenmore. Mom has a Singer (old) and a Brother (newer)

This is a decent price: Costco - Brother Computerized 110-stitch Function Sewing Machine

Adrienne, you are having way too much fun with this question! LOL

Lynn, I'm glad to see the next generation enjoying sewing and creating.

I forgot I asked this til just now. I have been talking to Athena/Kerri via FB and well.... I finally decided to just buy from the local fabric store where DD takes a sewing class. I wasn't going to buy there because they only sell Pfaff and they are costly. I'm just going to go ahead and do it. The lowest Pfaff they have is 299 and should keep her happy for a long while. We've already been through one crappy one.... waste of money.. it was a kid machine.... basically never used, didn't work... threw away. PS.... It IS nice that she loves to sew. You should see the gorgeous purse/bag she made me for mom's day! I am not one to sew. This does not come from me. She is driving this hobby....

Oh... PS... the buying from the local store will also get her some more free lessons.... and my inlaws will chip in as well.

Thank you.... I appreciate everyone's advice! Kerri actually thought I should buy a good used one. I am lazy! I just don't have the time or energy to do that.

My husband got me an inexpensive Brother from Walmart to start on- I think it was $60-70, and it has been great so far. I have heard others complain of tension problems, but I haven't experienced that at all. Good for your daughter! Sewing is an awesome skill.
