Toddler OCD

Man, the 'rituals' around bedtime are getting sooooo looooong. Well, first it is about 5+ books that I must read. Lately it goes like this:
What about "Cuando Estoy, I love that book"
Then Renzo says 'No, Cuando Estoy bye bye, and he places it in a flat file drawer.
So, I ask, 'which book?'
Ummmmmm.
Ooooh, I say excitedly, I like it When?
Off to the drawer it goes. repeat with about 5 more books.
Ummmmmm, he says. Ummmmmm.
Finally he picks a book. Now this book shows a library ladder against a wall of book shelves, quite similar to what is in his room. So, we don't get past that image in the inside front cover too quickly. Then Renzo needs to identify las escaleras / ladder and go climb 1 step. Last night it became 3 steps up. Then he returns to read the book. But then they show the ladder again and off he goes to climb.
Then next book. For this book, Renzo needs to push a certain rocking-style chair over to me and he sits there and rocks and slips about as I read.

Then there is the crib ritual. 'Must have two water bottles. They must be placed in a certain place, although he changes that up nightly. Must have two blankets...

It is all kinds of funny when we need to stop his delaying tactics and just put him down when he starts crying for a certain book, so as I am putting him down he may be screaming Jeje fish, Jeje fish; or paaatiiiitooooosss (ducklings).

And it extends to other things too, papa recently brushed his nose while brushing his teeth and now Renzo demands it every time. It is just nutty, although I think it is just 2-year-old-itis.

anyone else goin' through this too? Come on spill the details!

You just described our evenings exactly! Last night I was just wondering how long her list of "things that must be done before bed" was going to get. After the usual bath, teeth, lotion, jammies (which takes forever and she has to be the one to decide which jammies etc.) Then three books...then the fun starts. Once in the crib she has to have three different blankets: the quilt that nana made her, her cuddle blanket, and her blankie. On odd nights she decides she needs a diferent blanket and the other ones MUST be removed from the crib- until the moment I leave the room, and then she needs the original three back in with her. She has to have a sippy cup of FRESH water. And she insists that I go fill it with fresh water each time. Then it must be placed at the end of the crib. Then a book in the crib- but it is sooo hard to decide which one. Once I hand her the books she changes her mind. on and on and on. She has to have a hug and get tucked in. Then I walk out and check on Savannah. then Eden wants me back in for another hug and tuck in again.

With Savannah I remember her bedtime list starting to grow around this age. Once she was closer to three we started a new routine. We made a stack of cards with the name and picture of each of her bedtime requests and she was allowed to pick three (i.e. bedtime song, drink of water and story) and no more. Eden isnt quite old enough for that but I can see we are headed there.

That's a great idea, Jennifer!!! I think we'll try that one when Lily gets a little older. We have the same issues here, Paz, and not just with bedtime. It's with EVERYTHING!!!

Jennifer that is a great idea. I will tuck that away for future use. We are not quite there with the requests. Kiera wants to hear the same book every night. Red Fish, Blue Fish, By Dr. Seuss. She totally has it memorized. Because it is such a long book, it is the only one we read. We have our own issues, though...we were out of town so much with Kiera sleeping either with us or in a pack n play in our room, she can't go to sleep on her own. Dh has resorted to laying on her floor until she falls asleep...ugh!
