not really a debate but on topic I guess

I wanted to ask this question, but since it was this board that triggered it, I thought it would be ok to post here. Not a debate, just curious.

A while ago, my gramps and I are talking(he's 90) and there was coverage of the war on tv. I asked him what he thought of "todays war" and he became very upset and said "I was a medic for the entire second world war. I saved men, I killed men(to end their suffering). We were lucky if we got a **** bus/train ticket to get back home when we came back from over sea's.These guys(the big wigs in the white house) never even shoot a gun at a person, they dont even go anywhere near the war". It was a white house briefing on CNN at the time.

I thought for a second and said something about the media is in the war more now then they ever were. nothing is secret and there are public answers for everything. Its a different war grandpa.

Any of you here, that had family in the second world war? Did/do they talk about it with all going on now?

Again, just posting here because of the other posts.. didn't want to attrack 10,000 posters to this forum by mentioning a post on the debate board got me thinking..

Anyway thanks.. just curious

My Uncle served then. He always kept to himself about the war....even when prodded. He did some intel/army thing with Normandy. So he basically is scarred for life with that trauma. He lost alot of friends that day.

The only thing I have heard from him in comparison to this war and that one is that the media gets too much in the way. He always says that they are not equipped to have the mindset to be on their toes...but gets to emotional in finding that little grain of a story without knowing the whole scenario. I sort of understand what he is saying, but will never know the magnitude...because I never lived it.

Generally, you will not find too many of the WWII vets being vocal about their experience. Vietnam and Korea not much there either, but then again, the way the media and some Americans treated them, it is certainly understandable.

My Grandad was in WWII and the Korean Conflict. My grandad will say there is too much media. Let the soldiers do their job etc.

No relatives in WWII but interesting media story about my dad during Desert Storm...
Dad was with the 41st Combat Support Hospital out of Ft. Sam Houston, TX and a news crew decided to travel with the 41st to cover their "journey." The crew got bored and complained there was not enough blood and gore so they decided to head off with an Infantry unit. During the separation there was a skirmish and the news crew was unable to reunite with the 41st for a couple of weeks...the news crew reported back that the 41st was lost and presumed dead...for 2 weeks my mom and I waited to hear if he was really dead...finally the crew reports back the 41st has been found and they are fine. When the 41st returned home the new crew invited all the families down for a big group interview. When it was my turn to speak I asked why they thought it was ok to report false news and did they realize the damage they did to the families back home...they cut my part out of the interview. After the interview they asked if I wanted to see a video of my dad taking a dump in one of the sand dunes...they some how thought this was amusing. I was 14 and to this day I do not trust the news and I don't like their over-involvement in combat.

My DH is currently serving and currently deployed and the amount of PC bull crap he has to endure with the media really gets his blood boiling. DH has 19 years in service first as infantry and now as aviation and he will tell you the media gets in the way and makes irresponsible reports.

The military is there (wherever they are) to do a job--not create some reality show for the rest of us. I'm routinely disgusted by the reports and gratuitous voyerism (sorry my spelling has gone to crap!) These soldiers are real people and have real families...I feel the media exploits these soldiers and families all to often just to boost their ratings.

Sorry for the rant...the military and warfare today...it seems like people think it's entertainment for the masses.

Ruger that is AWFUL. I think stories like yours is just another example of how journalism is DEAD. It is all for ratings. Just look at them trying to salivate over filming them bringing the bodies to Dover. I mean they are like a freak show. Total disrespect for the families and they could care less how it affects people...only if they get their "drama" into it. They are a sick bunch of people IMO. And they do treat it like a reality show....edited of course.

My FIL fought in WWII, and like Julester's uncle, he rarely spoke about it. I think that generation did what needed to be done, then they came home and put it behind them, for the most part. FIL died before 9.11.

I have a grandfather and an a great-uncle that served in WWII. My granddad's baby brother was lost in the South Pacific. The group he was with was a part of a history channel story many years ago.

My granddad passed away before 9/11, but knowing him the way I did, he wouldn't be happy with the media's constant coverage of the war. That truly was, The Greatest Generation. I only wish that we had a fraction of what those folks had. My Granddad was a very private man... He didn't talk much about his experience.

That is a fact! I remember listening to my grandmother talk about what they did during the depression. She always told me about having to trace around their shoes with cardboard each day because the soles were worn out from the bottom of their shoes and they had no money to buy new ones. I look in my closet at the excess of what I have and can't even think about complaining about the way things are. We are so blessed, even in hard economic times, to have the pleasures that we do.
