Got a question about drivers' licenses and donor cards
Texas used to have a spot on a driver's license where one could indicate his/her desire to be an organ donor. I renewed my license in 2001 and when I asked about being listed as a donor, I was told that Texas was no longer putting that on a drivers license but that I could get a donor sticker and I'd have to carry a card, etc. I have no clue why they got rid of that being an elective thing on a drivers' license?? I know TONS of people who ask me about my donor sticker when I show proof of ID because they weren't told ANYTHING about that when they got their drivers licenses. That sucks!!! (BTW--the donor card requires me to get like four witness signatures...sheesh...I'm surprised they don't have me notorize the **** thing!) Forgot to add...I just renewed my license online and then had to search down the info for my donor sticker...what a PITA!!!
What do other states do for donor identification? Why do you think a state would make it so hard (and so un-publicized) to elect to be a donor? My DH says that the state should make the default that everyone is a donor UNLESS they indicate otherwise. He says that people who object to organ donation are going to be more likely to be aware of its presense and thus more likely to elect NOT to be a donor. Interesting thought...what do you think?

MN has what TX used to have. At the time you renew your license you have the option to check "Donor". If you do, it will be indicated on the card.
Funny you asked this now. We just watched "John Q" and the woman killed in the car accident had a donor bracelet. Not sure what state that was - or if it is really one option out there.

I live in Florida where they do give you the option of putting it on your driver's license. But the whole thing is ridiculous anyway....your spouse or next of kind can completely change whatever you've put on there after you're dead anyway
