not sure at what age this starts but ds has had a week where he has been really grumpy. today he has been crying alot, has very had tummy and so gassy. he is also hard to burp. he has also been having problems pooping. he is 3 1/2 weeks old, not sure what age they diagnose colic.
a friend of mine told me this board is here so I had to come and visit and see if I could get some suggestions on what to do.

Ziggy,

I am sorry the new baby is not feeling well and sorry I did not see this post until just now. Colic usually appears between 2-4 weeks of age and lasts 3-4mos. I would encourage you to read the stickies on this bb and see if anything rings true. One sign that I found that differentiated colic from GERD (which dd also had) was distinct periods of crying each day. At first these episodes lasted from about 11pm-4am and then after several weeks adjusted to late afternoon. They did not happen every day but we definitely met the 3x a week cutoff normally given for dx. They call it the rule of 3: 3 or more hours of crying, 3 or more times a week that lasts about 3 months.

I think colic is one of the hardest things to deal with because the babies are so young and you feel powerless to help them. This can be just as hard psychologically on mom as it is physically on baby. So I encourage you to take care of yourself whenever possible, like maybe a hot bath or a relaxation session while dh takes care of the kiddos. If it is colic, this too shall pass. If it is GERD you can get help on the bb dedicated to that as well as talking to your ped about a referral to a GI specialist.

Take care,
Kate

ditto on the reflux.... 3-4 weeks is when both my refluxers started to show symptoms.

Ziggy,
Your lo sounds exactly like my little guy. I have tried everything possible to relieve his pain. I went lactose free with my bm. I tried lactose free formula. I tried so many combinations of things, Ovol for gas, gripe water etc....... It has been very hard but I have come to the conclusion that it will have to resolve itself.

I believe that we are nearing the end as he turns 12 weeks on Monday, so within the next few weeks we should be heading into calmer waters.

Good thing as it appears he is ready to start teething.

I found these helped some a cradle swing , or a bouncy seat- with vibrator, vacuum cleaner, car rides.

good luck and remember it is not forever.

thanks for asking.

its been rough these last few days. ds has a bad cold/cough and I think that makes it worse. last night he cried til 1 a.m. poor baby. I feel so bad for him. I have been sick too, so its been quiete the draining last few days for us.
I am trying dr brown bottles right now ,a nd some nuk ones so they don't get air in his belly. a friend suggested putting some corn syrup (? I think that is what its called) in his bottle, it helps him poop and he has started to pass some gas.
