Tenex anyone?

M had a med check today. Doc wants to try her on Tenex (or the generic equiv. - guanfacine). Have any of your kiddo's tried this. It's supposed to before hight bp - but doc said it also works on ADHD. He said it may make her a little drowsy in the beginning few days - or it may not.....uh..ok.

A little nervous about that because M's 1st grade class is doing Mass tomorrow morning - when she starts this stuff. I'd hate for her to fall asleep when she's supposed to be doing a reading.

I guess I'm just gunshy after our disasterous attempt w/Focalin XR.

It made my DD so sleepy that she was literally sleeping 16 hours a day if I let her. She was barely able to function in her dance classes. The side effects weren't worth it in her case.

She started out on .5mg twice a day. We tried giving it at night to allow her body to adjust better, and she was literally spaced out all day long.

For her case it wasn't a good choice of meds, but I have heard others have wonderful results with it.

Is it gaufenesin? The mucous thinner? Was that a typo? I want to say if it's that guafenesin, it has made both boys a little sleepy, but it was for coldds.

Guanfacine/Tenex is a blood pressure medication. My dd takes it for her adhd. It works very well for her. She used to be on clonidine for it but that one did knock her out. Tenex isnt supposed to make them so sleepy. I think it can vary on how strong the adhd is.
My dd has been on it for a long time, I love it. They just came out with an extended release that she started two days ago. It is called Intuniv. I will let you all know how that goes and if it is as effective for her.
Good luck and let us know how it goes. Hope it works as well for you as it has for us.

Well, it doesn't appear to be working. If anything, it's making her more agitated & nervous. Her poor teacher didn't know she was on the new med this morning until around 10:00. She wrote a note about her being agitated & nervous and that they had quite a struggle.
UGH!
We tried Focalin XR a few months back - made her bounce off the walls. The Methalyn she's been on for the majority of the time works ok - but her teacher says she's very hyper in the mornings. But she's fine in the afternoons. She would take her 1st dose of that at 7:00 - then the 2nd around 11:20 (right after she ate her lunch). Teacher said it was night & day between her mornings & afternoons.
When I read DH the teachers note (over the phone), he was really aggrevated. He can't understand why the doc would switch the med.
We're also frustrated with the fact that w/my resent job loss - and ins. coverage. We are losing the good Rx coverage. So, we have no clue what her meds will cost. If this Guanfacine would work right, it would only be $4! But the Methalyn was a Tier 3 med on my ins. - so who knows what it would cost w/out a co-pay. (We are going under DH's plan - but it's the HRA type - & doesn't have the co-pays.)
I'm so tired of going round & round w/this medication stuff. I just want to find the thing that WORKS for her!!!
Her ODD has been coming out a lot lately too. I am wondering if it's the stress of my recent lay-off. We will be ok - and I'm taking the rest of '09 off before pounding the pavement. I thought not being so rushed in the mornings would be helpful - but she's still being argumentive.

Right now, (4:00) she's already in her pj's (her habit as soon as she gets home) and covered up on the couch. She says she's so cold. But she doesn't feel the least bit feverish.

CALGON...TAKE ME AWAY!!!

It realy is trial and error but hopefully you'll find the right RX to help her.

She's actually been doing quite well on it the passed 3 days. I'm wondering if the 1st day's reaction was just her body trying to get used to the new Rx. This weekend, she's been really good - more laid back & mellow. Now groggy - but not hyper & defiant. She has taken a few naps over the past few days - 1st day it was for 1.5 hrs. But she also definitely has her appetite back!!!

DH asked her how she felt on her new medicine. She said she felt good. And that she didn't have an attitude!

She's off school this whole week. So, here's hoping and praying that this is how she is at school as well!!!

Tenex caused my son to get more anxious and was falling asleep at 1pm on the way to therapy after kinder. We moved to Risperdal and now are on a combo Abilify/Risperdal.

Wonderful news to hear! Its so nice when the meds work with little side effects.
My dd who just started the new extended release version seems to be doing good as well.
How has school been?

She's off this whole week. We won't know how it's working until next week.
She does get tired in the afternoon. And the past couple of days, she has complained of a headache. I don't know if that's the meds or perhaps her sinuses. It's right in her forehead. And I've had a sinus headache the past day or so. Really hoping it's the sinus thing....
But she is much calmer and more cooperative.
