Melatonin...
DS has been getting to bed late. I know.. the school year is over in 2 days but I recently bought some chewable Melatonin and I think it helped him wind down. It was like 1 mg. Anyone else? I know others that have given their children Benedryl... not regularly but perhaps when sleeping over at other kids houses so they could wind down from the excitement. I have heard from one Mom whose DH is a Dr. that the Benedryl has bee around for years and is harmless. I know Melatonin doesn't have any FDA stuff since it's a supplement. But, DS just GAGS on any kind of Benedryl and think's the taste is nasty. Anyone else tried the Melatonin? Just curious.

Vincent has been taking melatonine for over a year now, as he has a very hard time winding down at night. It has helped him immensely. I only give it to him during the week and not every night then on weekend he gets none. Vincent takes 3mg

My older non medicated son has been taking melatonin for about 2 or 3 years at bedtime and DS had been taking it since we began meds 2 weeks ago. I take it from time to time too and it really helps. I buy the sublingual type at GNC and the boys just hold that tasty pill under heir tongue till its gone.

McKenna has been on Melatonin...3mg..Since about 2 yo..We grind it with the pill crusher and put it in her yogurt as this is how she takes all of her meds...Works great, harmless and doesn't have the next day grogginess as I have exp. w/ the Benadryl

We have the sublingual kind but it doesn't melt away easily so I just tell DS to suck on it. Is that bad to suck or chew it if it's sublingual? Oh, and we just do 1 mg because that seems to help. He is abouut 50 lbs at 8 years old.

We use it. Max gets 3 mg too. Different types melt faster than others. When it is placed sublingually I believe it gets into their systems quicker than it does if it's ingested. But certainly no harm in sucking/chewing on it. I find the fruity flavoured kind take longer to melt, whereas the minty one melts nearly right away (Max does not like mint though). He doesn't get melatonin every night, usually twice or three times a week.

Thanks you for this thread. I have been considering using this with my one daughter for some time and like hearing that it works. Would you use 1mg or 3mg for a 43 lb 49 inch 7.5 yr old? Where do you find the 1mg? I have only seen 3mg or 5mg.

You can get a pill splicer. I used just that to cut the pill in half. I would just try the 1 mg for a few nights and see it it works. Then if it doesn't maybe try the 3 mg.
