It was part of my regime. It is an older drug and it causes diarrhea. Ask about the possibility of using paregoric to slow it down. That may not be okay because of the alcohol. The over the counter diarrhea drugs can be used at a much higher dose, so ask about that.
Your dad can also go in for the several days following chemo to get fluids. It was amazing how helpful that was to me. Make sure he is drinking lots of water and that they are following his potassium levels.
I was stage 4 as well. I am NED now and I have been for over five years post chemo.
Are they using oxiplatinum. I used that and the full furry work up or foxfull furry. I can't remember the name. I would give John Hopkins a call and ask for the colon rectal oncology department. Find out what the leading therapy is at this point.
My next questions is have all the tumors been removed? If they haven't has he thought of seeing another surgeon? Some doctors are better then others and there could be somebody out there willing to try. I had spread to my liver that nobody would touch in Idaho. I went to Mayo clinic and one of the leading liver surgeons in the world did mine.
Let me know if there is anything else I can do.

You may already know this, but I want to state it for the record... Avastin is not a chemo, it's an angiogenesis inhibitor. Just because it doesn't work for your dad doesn't mean nothing will. Hang in there.
Suebee, your story always amazes me.Last edited by walrys; 03-25-2009 at 06:48 PM.
