ow to manage IVF financially?

Hi ladies,
I have stage 4 endo and we have been ttc #2 for 2 years now. I am really losing hope because the doctor has said that our only real option is IVF. We can't afford it. Is there any help available in Canada? Any suggestions?

Thanks
FW

Save, save, save. Don't be afraid to ask for help from family either. We have had 5 failed IUI's and one failed IVF... Not an cheap round of treatments... planning and saving for a frozen embryo cycle. Best of luck to you both. Jo

We paid our first IVF with our RRSP contributions plus help from MIL. Jburke is right don't be afraid to ask family members as they may surprise you!! We didn't have insurance coverage for meds on our first IVF or 4 IUI's BUT finally our insurance covers all meds 100% so we are thinking about doing another IVF but we spent the last year trying to save and will contemplate another IVF in the early spring.

As far as I know our Canadian healthcare doesn't cover IVF unless you live in Ontario and if it is proven that your tubes are blocked or compromised then OHIP will cover up to 3 cycles of IVF. Other then that I don't think there is any other coverage unless you or your DH has something through your work insurance but that seems to be more comman in the USA>

I feel for all you guys.
The cost of IVF is really not managable to the average Canadian person.
We put ours on our credit card and our now paying it off. A fact that is even more painful now that it looks like it is failing.
If all i had to do was sell my house and i would be guaranteed a baby or two i would do it ina second but it is the gamble of it all. the fact that you could sell everything you have and still no baby.
The cost of it also makes living your life and not thinking about the baby stuf impossible because all we do is save money for IVF. No trips, no entertainment, no upgrading the house, nothing that normal people would do to enjoy life. Everything goes towards IVF and then maybe adoption.
As for asking your family, it is actually surprising about how little people want to help.
My parents would but i wont take it cause they have no money at all.
We askd my DHs parents who own 3 stores and are pretty well off. we asked them if they wanted to contribute, not the whole amount, just anything. they said a flat out no. They did not even offer to kick in $100. This is the same time as they spent all this money on their other sons new born.
It really really hurt. I dont sugges asking family.

Wow Viktoria...that is really horrible! It scares me to even think about IVF...we are not there yet...let's hope we won't get to that.

We are already in debt and DH's parents have helped us out once already.
What is this about being in Ontario with blocked tubes? If that is true, then if anything beyond the ordinary is wrong with me I hope it is that! How scary is that??

This sucks.

Hi Paeta
Sorry, I was totally jumping the gun.
I am sur eyou will not need IVF, so many people don't. However, if you have blocked tubes you can have 3 cycles covered in Ontario. Even if you produce babies from the first 2 you can still have a third. You do have to pay for drugs.
It is so terribly unfair because these laws are based on the most archaic tests. My doctor told me that blocked tubes are covered because years ago they were able to prove that IVF with ICSI works for people with blocked tubes and not able to prove the rate of effectivenes with other disorders. It totally kills me because its been years and there is a lot of data to support help for everyone but they cant seem to change the laws. We are infertile due to oncology, my husband had cancer.
