I didn't think I'd ever have a nursing question again but I do....

I am sure we have thrush. This is my first time in 3 kids of having this. DS has a white-ish tongue and I saw white on the roof of his mouth. My nipples are dry/cracked/bleeding and painful! Anyone else ever have this? Is it easy to get rid of? I think I will call the ped first thing tomorrow morning. Will the ped treat me too? Will they insist on seeing him and then just give me a prescription too? Thanks!

Oh no! That is no fun! I had it for a long time with my first dd (we kept passing it back and forth) and ironically, I just got it right now again with my 10 month old. Yes, you will both need to be treated, otherwise you will just pass it back and forth and it will not go away. It can be hard to get rid of. With my first dd, we started with the nystatin swabs for the baby and also ended up doing the venetian violet. I took oral diflucan for about a month. Your ped may want you to contact your OB for your prescription. Kelly mom has some good info on it. Some other things that are supposed to help is just keeping the nipples clean, letting them "air dry" a few times a day, and do not rub milk on your nipples as it is a breeding ground for more yeast. HTH!

Thrush is just plain awful. You won't be able to get an Rx until tomorrow but in the meantime you can wash EVERYTHING that has touched your nipples in hot water and bleach if you can, then hang them in the sun to dry. Gentian violet and grapefruit seed extract are available in health food stores and sometimes in chain pharmacies that can go both in baby's mouth and on your nipples. They both work to at least slow down the growth of the fungus. Remember to keep up a good deep latch because with you skin compromised by the fungus nipple damage is more likely. Hope it goes away soon.

Gentian Violet kicks it FAST!!! May be hard to find, though. I've dealt with thrush with 3/4 of my babies and that's the way to go. No wasting time with Nystatin. Good luck!

I had major problems when bfding Vincent. My lactation consultant told me to go to Dr Jack Newman's website and search for nipple cream. My drthen wrote a script for the pharmacist. It truly saved my nipples. They were so sore and cracked right at the base of my nipples. My dr said she had never seen such a bad case of thrush I honestly was ready to quit bfding. I'll see if I can find the link. I hope this works

mix 1 tablespoon white vinegar w/ 1 cup water, dab on each nipple after feeding, let air dry. )always gave me relief right away! ) This always helped me while I was doing everything else the ladies mentioned above. I have always had thrush with my babies, except this one so far!

Yes, I was given tx as well... over & over. The LC said to use the vinegar/water tx, plain yogurt on the nipples, to eat plain yogurt myself. It was horrid..the pain & the nipples bleeding all over. And no; it was not easy to get rid of.

when I dealt with this with DS there was only one drug store that carried it and they had to order it in for me. The drugs the dr gave didnt' kick it all the way. The Gentine vilot did.

So call before you go to the drug store and make sure they carry it or can order it in for you.

Oh yeah, be ready for Goth Baby too. Everything will turn purple.

OH and if you put it on your nipples and expose them to sunlight (which helps) they will turn from purple to iridescent gold with purple undertones. It is really freaky and it stays like that until the stuff wears off (it takes days). It's kinda funny and can make a great story in years to come, like the time I was mowing the lawn in the back yard topless with gentian violet on the nipples and a neighbor came over to borrow garden tools. Yeah, good times.
