Anyone preparing to breastfeed their adoptive baby?

I'd love to help.

Ask Lenore ~ Home Page was my best friend.

I would put your baby to breast ASAP after they're born and avoid bottles and pacis.

I used Welcome to Lact-Aid International, Inc. for supplies; as well as a medela double pump - about $300 new, should be found easily at babies r us and sometimes target.

Good Luck to you!

THanks! Should I try to pump prior to his birth? I've heard yes and know, and am not really sure what to do...I just want to prepare myself as best I can...

I did, but I had a lot of time to prepare. I don't know what the right answer is for you. If you can pull it off and want to, I suggest buying a Medela double electric pump and pumping every 2 hours around the clock. You might not get anything, but it would give you something to do and you'd get used to not sleeping!

No one wants to think their baby won't come home, but if you want to wait until he's born or when everything's signed, that's fine too.

Shelle - congratulations!

My lactation specialist adopted and breastfed without pumping. Instead she used a "supplemental feeding tube" system, where a vial of formula is worn around the neck with a tiny tube that hangs down and is taped to your nipple. The baby nurses your breast milk, then, when it runs out, you open the tube so the formula (or pumped breastmilk) flows out. The baby's suckling stimulates greater milk production, and it prolongs skin to skin bonding time.

Pumping is great - I just wanted to add this idea/technique to the mix.
