Does anyone know if dental cleanings/topical fluoride treatment are advisable/safe while TTC or during the first trimester? I can't get a straight answer from my dentist.

I'd definitely call the doctor to be sure. I believe I had a routine cleaning during pregnancy, but did NOT have x-rays. Good luck!

Hi wannabebe2 and sorry to be almost a year late in posting. Notice how few people know anything about fluoride in early pregnancy. I am not a doctor or dentist, but have self-studied that subject. There are no clinical trials, but a few observations, and lots of biology. In a nutshell, fluoride is extremely important later in pregnancy and infancy while the teeth are forming, making the teeth that get it far more beautiful and able to resist cavities 100%. But in the first trimester no teeth are forming (until day 60 I think it is).

Teeth are organs, and form using the same general processes that are used to form other organs and body parts. One of the more dramatic things that fluoride does for the teeth is prevent fairly big defects called "pits and fissures". Essentially it seems that fluoride slows down the timing just a wee bit, giving the tooth the time to finish and close these seams at the end of the process. It may be that the same thing can happen earlier in pregnancy, and if so, a little fluoride could prevent birth defects. There are some observations (like slightly less heart defects in areas with high fluoride) that say this may be true, and none to the contrary. I'll give you a few links below with more details.

So as for your question, would a little fluoride treatment to your teeth in early pregnancy be a good or bad thing, the answer is most likely zero effect (you only swallow a little bit, and just for a few days), but if there was an effect, it would most likely be positive.

To get the good effects of fluoride, you would need to eat lots of "rough-tough" vegetables and/or animal parts that are bone or bone-like (like canned salmon has softened bones). Most teas have a fair amount. Or there are various ways to get fluoride from water or supplement products which are a little more complicated but more reliable.

This one is just about the biology of fluoride and giving organs enough time to finish growing:

Good luck, and thanks for the chance to share. Ray
