How many gallons of milk should a family of 4 consume in one month?? I know the answers will be less than we use.

At my kid's 18 month check-up the Ped was asking how much milk they drink and I had counted DD's milk consumption a few days before, when I was letting them have as much as they wanted, and DD drank 43 oz that day! And that was not as much as she could drink! That is when the Ped said limit it to 3 a day.

Okay, I have been looking at our grocery bills for last month and we went thru 23 gallons of milk in September! Dh eats cereal, I only use milk in my tea in the mornings and my kids are milk-aholics. DD would drink it all day long if I let her. We limit them to 3 sippy cups a day, sometimes 4. I think that sounds crazy high! I just cannot believe it. I was telling Dh that the milk we buy really adds to the grocery bill because it seems like every time we turn around we are buying 3 gallons of milk. Oh boy, time to drink more water! My kids do not get juice often-maybe once or twice a month and only orange juice. They only drink water and milk the rest of the time. They get water with all meals and with snacks and milk in the am when they wake up, before naps and before bed. I think we should consider getting a cow. Or maybe two.

    That's all??? Seriously...
We only shop on paydays and then if we run out of milk. So, every other week, we buy 5 gallons of milk for the boys and 6 gallons for dh and I. That is 22 gallons on paydays only. But, we usually go out a few days before payday and pick up 1-2 more gallons for the boys and 2-3 gallons for Dh and I. So, for a month, I would say that we average about 25-27 gallons of milk for a family of 4
The boys pretty much have a drink with them at all times. They probably average about 3-4 cups of milk (white or chocolate), 1 cup of water, and 1-2 cups of juice a day. It seems like alot, but they drink alot. It didn't cause any problems with PT'ing, so I'm really not concerned. The doc isn't concerned either... They get milk with meals and as they want it through out the day. Juice is usually given with snack after naps and water is when they see me drinking it and want it and when they've been really active (being outside, etc). I'm sure they need more water, but they take after me...milk-aholic's!
Sorry, didn't mean to turn this into a book about our family...

I think we have you beat on the milk issue. The kids go through a gallon per day. They each get a sippy cup for breakfast, nap and bed and possibly a few other times during the day. I try to give them water at least 1x per day and juice is only 1x per day (if I can help it). They drink 1% or 2% now. DH is not a milk drinker but will use it on cereal and in coffee. And of course for cooking/baking with. I drink skim milk and I LOVE milk so I do drink it with breakfast and dinner usually. We go through 1 gallon per day of 1-2% milk and then approx 2 gallons of skim per wk.

So I am guessing that is 38 gallons per month?! The good thing about OH is that they actually put the milk ON SALE, which for some reason, in PA they never did. A few mos ago I was able to get milk on sale for $1.88/$2 per gallon which I LOVED but now the cheapest I can find it is $2.39/$2.50 per gallon, usu. $2.50. And if no one has it on sale, we are paying $3.99/$4.09 per gallon

Now you make me want to whip out my calculator-
    38 gallons @ $2.50 ea = $95 per month
    38 gallons @ $4 ea = $152 per month

Guess I need to find some more stuff to sell on the LA bd!

Wow! So, we are not that unusal? I am not a juice fan. Sometimes we let our kids drink some of our Gatorade. They love that! But there is just too much sugar in that and in juice! They do like water, too. But they wake up demanding milk!

Diane, you make me feel more normal! I just figured we were crazy with the amount we use. It sure adds up, though! Doesn't it? We can be very sure your boys are not dehydrated! LOL! How are you???

Misty, you have one more mouth to sip milk, so I guess you should be using up more milk than Diane and I, but 38 gallons? Holy Camole!! Wow, you guys are milk drinking fools! Is Granny sneaking some when no one is looking? Skim milk? Eck! I think the cheapest we can get a gallon on sale here is $2.50ish. Mostly it is 3.15 or 3.25. Sometimes 3.99, which I refuse to pay if I can get it cheaper. The little savings like that x 23 gallons a month x 12x a year really adds up.

I have been filling their sippy cups with milk about 3/4, then adding water. The Ped said if they drink more than 3 or 4 sippy cups a day they can become anemic and constipated. DD is always constipated and DS is a pooping machine! DS is skinny, so he gets Whole Milk and DD is a cherub, so she gets either 2% or 1%. We hate skim milk as it seems like water with a tablespoon of milk in it. DD will drink her milk then try to drink DS's milk because she knows he has "the good stuff". It is funny. I will say what are you doing? And she will be half smiling at me. Then she stops drinking, looks for DS and hands him the milk, like I was just getting it to give to him! It is so funny!

Granny will only sneak 2% milk. I HATE skim milk, yuck, you may as well drink water!! Amy used to be so bad growing up I had to take her milk off of her to make her eat.

My BFF and her husband and kids are HUGE milk aholics. BFF is trying to lose some weight as she just had a baby. She told me she was looking at her diet and realized she is drinking 120 oz of milk per day herself- that is 2 20oz glasses with each meal!! She decided to cut back on that. Granted it is skim, but that is a ton of milk!

Granny the milk thief and Amy the milkaholic!! Hee hee!

    BC-eli,

OMG, that is a ton of milk!! I hate milk. I do love it in my tea in the morning, but I hate if I pour too much. I would die if I had to drink an 8 oz glass a day, let alone what your BFF drinks! She needs to be hooked up to the cow's udder!
