The GP thread about getting a tattoo

Not a tattoo person here but I have nothing against those who have them though.
The thread just reminded me about tattoos in Japan. Did you know that you can be refused a sports gym membership, or entry to a swimming pool, or hot springs or sento (public bath) if you have tattoos. DH told me about this way back and I was sooo surprised. He said if the tattoo is smaller, they ask you to cover it up with a bandage or wear long sleeves, etc. You obviously can't do that with really big tattoos. The reason is because tattoos are associated with the yakuza (mafia). I'm sure not all sports gyms refuse but most mainstream ones have this rule.
Then DH proceeds to say that obviously they don't have that rule in Taiwan because he saw sooo many men with tattoos in the sports gym there.
