Email to my brother about our recent experiences with dyslexia

Posted 09-26-2009 at 09:11 AM by Fatcatsmom

Thanks XXXX, I wish I could give you a big hug right now.

It is so interesting. Jessica thinks math like you. She can do addition and subtraction like nobodies business, even multiplication etc. Give her something to memorize and she has it down in seconds. Give her something she has to think through and the tears come flowing because she doesn't get it. She'll do great, but she may not always understand how or why a math problem is what it is.

John on the other...

Deep Question from my 7 year old

Posted 09-03-2009 at 02:59 PM by Fatcatsmom

John asked me in the car the other day:

Mommy, would you rather be ignored by everyone, or be having fights with everyone?

After I finished being stunned by the question, I told him it was tough to answer, but I guess ignored. He said he'd rather be fighting with everyone rather than being ignored (interesting since he can be very solitary and he is not a physically aggressive kid)

I asked him why he asked that question. He has been listening to the Lightning...

The Potty Experiment

Posted 08-15-2009 at 01:58 PM by Fatcatsmom

John decided to do a "speriment." John decided he wanted to weigh himself, then poop, and then see how much he weighed afterwards. Funny to begin with, but funnier because he really didn't need to poop at that time so he was really trying. Dh, Jess and I were lying in our bed waiting for him to be done so we could get them to bed. We waited and waited and kept asking him if he was done. Finally dh said, "John, it's time to finish up," and we hear John say from behind the...

Amazing change

Posted 07-16-2009 at 09:52 AM by Fatcatsmom

I don't want to go into major details on this public post, but if you have seen my other posts, you know some of what I have been going though with ds. After years of trying to figure everything out, we finally bit the bullet and . . .

My son sat on the couch for 15 minutes last night and read a book to himself - no fidgeting, twitching, or distraction. I asked him what the book was about and he could tell me. It almost brought me to tears.

Of course, then he became...

We finally have 1 official dx for John - Dyslexia

Posted 02-06-2009 at 05:55 PM by Fatcatsmom

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The conclusion is he has an IQ that is at the top of the charts, and he clearly has dyslexia - no question. I cried a little during the meeting - not because he has dyslexia, but because it really hit me how much this kid has been struggling and extremely frustrated with reading and writing. It is a testament to his abilities that he has gotten through as much school work as he has. I'm glad to have a...

Happy B'day Jessica and John - and proving that boys are easier than girls.

Posted 01-25-2009 at 12:01 PM by Fatcatsmom

In a insanity laden moment, we agreed to back to back sleep over parties for the kids birthday. So on Friday night Jan. 23 we had 6 boys and Saturday night Jan. 24, we had 5 girls for sleep overs. We just let the boys run! They started outside playing star wars and running after each other with make shift light sabers. In for pizza, cake and then roasted marshmallows in the fire place for s'mores, turned on the movie star wars which held their attention for the most part for the next three hours....

Want to remember these:

Posted 12-20-2008 at 07:42 AM by Fatcatsmom

John took some tests for Learning Rx. I asked him how they went and whether he finised. He said, "Not even remotely."

Jessica is doing Soduko puzzels. :: She really understands how to do them. We are just amazed at her ability to grasp the concept and do them!! Oh, and she is doing the medium level.

John wrote a story book last night about a scientist who drops a test tube and a ghost comes out of it. Everyone runs and the ghost is sad because...

The Magic Show

Posted 09-02-2008 at 03:15 AM by Fatcatsmom

I let John play with a magic set yesterday and after a while he put on a magic show for me and Daddy with Jessica as his "lovely assistant."

Everytime he did a trick he would say,

"Preserve! I will now ask my lovely assistant to . . . .

One of those moments you wish you had on tape.

"Plausible"

Posted 04-19-2008 at 05:14 PM by Fatcatsmom

John just said that something on TV looked "plausible."

I tell you, this kid's vocabulary is better than mine - if there is a choice between a 4 syllable word and a 1 syllable word, he will choose 4!

John and Jessica do American Idol

Posted 04-19-2008 at 11:17 AM by Fatcatsmom

The kids were in the car with me driving to pick up dinner and decided to play American Idol - now a favorite family night in our house. Jessica was the contestant and John was Simon. Jessica sang in her best operatic voice Somewhere over the Rainbow.

Simon's (John's) commentary said very slowly and precisely: "Jessica, that was very impressive, but at times a little thin."
