an interesting observation about children today

Posted 06-09-2008 at 09:42 AM by Brina

Are they growing up too fast? or too slow?

There seems to be an odd combination of the two going on.

On the one had we seem to be pushing certain things down to lower and lower ages. Be they toys, clothing or experiences. When I was a little girl I received my first barbie when I was in second grade. This was normal. My friends and I played with them until we were nine or ten. Today my daughter was one of the last of her friends to receive a barbie and she was...

What is it about little girls named Jasamine?

Posted 04-02-2008 at 07:10 AM by Brina

Are they all little *****es? divas in the making?

this is the third time we have met a little girl with some iteration of this name who was just downright mean.

this most recent time I was picking D up from ski school on the last day of vacation. the demon spawn was throwing snowballs into other children's faces and calling them names. One of the other little girls told demon spawn's mother the thing that ds had been saying and the mother's reply was, "oh, she...

New study on circumcision and HIV - and the results are not what you think

Posted 12-06-2007 at 07:28 AM by Brina

CDC just release a new study on HIV and circumcision status done here in the US. Among African American and Latino men there is no correlation. There goes another arguement.

Infertility and what it leaves behind

Posted 05-06-2006 at 06:11 PM by Brina

I have heard people refer to the scars of infertility. But this past week I have been thinking on the subject and I think the aftermath of infertility is more like a broken bone that heals, but crooked or with a bump. It is essentially invisible to everybody else, but when it is your body you know that it is not as it once was. It is different - it feels different, it moves different. Most days it does not hurt.

After a broken bone has healed there are times that you are aware...

the new ladies who lunch

Posted 04-28-2006 at 12:46 AM by Brina

I used to laugh at them. I didn't actually know them, but we all have heard fo them, seen caricatures of them on tv programs and seen their pictures on the society pages of newpapers. There is a song from a broadway show, sorry, it is 2 in the morning, I do not remember the name of the show and I don't feel like looking it up, that refers to them as the ladies who lunch; Clad in chanel suits and scuffless shoes, eating with their equally fabulously clad friends. They don't work, they volunteer,...

12 Reasons to Say “No” to Circumcision
By Tara Bzdok

Circumcision is a very controversial and emotionally charged topic. Even doctors have their personal feelings about the procedure — and unfortunately, they do not all agree. A doctor advising circumcision of a healthy infant for any reason is going against the recommendations of the American Medical Assocation (AMA), the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP), the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), the American College...

things that would improve travel through airports but which will never happen

Posted 04-02-2006 at 02:02 PM by Brina

1. two lines at check in and security. "Those with a clue", "those without a clue"

2. new rule for carry-ons - if you can't lift it to put it in the overhead without assistence than it does not meet the definition of "carry-on" and it will be taken and checked - you can pick it up at baggage claim.

3. hire traffic facilitors whose job it is to keep people moving through the airport - they will be equipped with cattle prods. anybody...

the community of adoption

Posted 03-29-2006 at 04:36 PM by Brina

I have always felt a connection to other people touched by adoption - other parents, other children. It is only in recent years that I have realized that though that connection I can feel NORMAL. I am not the only one like me. When I meet adopted children, especially older ones, I always make sure they know that I am adopted as well. This almost always seems to bring a smile to their faces.

Last week in church, well, at coffee hour after church services a little girl - well, a...

i should have known things were going too well.

Posted 03-29-2006 at 04:02 PM by Brina

the construction that is. We have been moving along at a nice clip.

The walls are up in the master and the tub pan was poured. The tile pattern had been laid out and the tile guy started to lay the tile. That is when we discovered that the plumber had raised the toilet collar (?) 3/4" without telling anybody. The tile that was down (thankfully not much) had to be pulled up and a thicker sub-floor had to be laid. We only lost a day because of that, and I think we had a...
