Really can't take much more!!!!!!!!!!!!! Huge rant warning!!!!!!!
We've had dh's aunt and uncle here from overseas since Friday night. When they asked if they could stay here for the second week of their vacation, we happily agreed, not realizing that it would also include his mom and his sister. Dh and I have been working our a$$es off keeping everyone fed which hasn't even been appreciated. It's really hard to please everybody, one won't eat pork, one won't eat pasta, one won't eat onions, one won't eat peppers, a couple don't like red meat. OMG, we'll just eat chicken every single night I guess. But wait, it will have to be the whole chicken because some like dark meat, some like white meat. None of them seem to like salad very much even though I've tried to be creative and mix it up as much as I can.
Then dh and I get to clean up all by ourselves every single night. Dh's sister is basically a sloth with skin instead of fur. She's the laziest, most self-centered person I've ever met. She does NOTHING to pitch in. Our dishwasher's going twice a day, the washing machine at least twice a day. They won't put their clothes in the dryer so I have sh*t hanging all over my mudroom (which we mostly use as our entrance) and laundry room. I had to drop my son off at daycare this morning without socks on (and it was freezing cold here this morning) because I couldn't get in my bedroom (which we've given up to aunt and uncle) to get clean socks. We live in the country so we're on a well and septic and have an electric hot water heater but nobody seems to care.
The kids are sleep deprived, they're not getting to bed on time no matter how hard we try. They're sleeping in the same room on bunk beds so dh's mom could have dd's room to herself. DH and I are sleep deprived because we're sleeping in our lovely unfinished basement on an old ratty pull-out couch.
Apparently I'm the bad guy today because I didn't go on their day trip with them to an aircraft museum. I'm sorry, but I'm not that interested in that, it's an hour and a half drive from here, I have to clean up this house a bit before it drives me absolutely bonkers, I have work to do (the paying kind) and I have to pick up my dd at school at 3:40. I'd be freaking out that we'd get caught in traffic or something and not make it back in time to pick her up. My mom and dad are up north so I don't have any back today.
If anyone has made it this far in this rant, bless you. I just really need my house back to normal soon.

Holy smokes! I think you'll have to JUST SAY NO next time and explain why, even if you're afraid to. Who cares if they think less of you for not taking their crap? Really, DH should do it, but if he won't grow some, you'll have to.
Good Luck the rest of their stay.Posted 10-01-2009 at 09:12 AM by pepper

my sis used to do that, come on the weekends with her 4 kids and they'd eat and then go play. I didn't have the picky kind re:food but I got tired of cleaning things up all the time. One day I told my sis(in a nice way), that it'd help if after eating, they'd pick their plates up and put in the sink/kitchen. so they did start to do that everytime they came. I remember too well, how frustrating it was til I finally said something. I guess if it was me and some don't like this and some don't like that, let them know which restaurants are close by so they can choose what they want to eat. I can't beleive that they expect you to cook around their likes and dislikes.

Oh, maybe they're waiting for some direction. Delegate dinner or setting the table or cleaning/folding/etc. Toss their dry clothes in a laundry basket for them to fold/hang themselves. Or do it wet - when they realize clothes don't dry themselves they might figure out how to use the dryer. LOL And you gave up YOUR bedroom? WOW. Even my dh would never do that, we're too selfish.
I don't blame you for not going to the museum. You need time to decompress and clean and be close to the school.
Maybe a card/board game will diffuse the tension tonight.Posted 10-01-2009 at 09:20 AM by pepper

Girl, I have been there!!! Breathe!!!
I could tell you all sorts of "advice" but I know that there is always a BUT (mainly because I have BTDT). Muddle through the best you can.
You need to look out for your family, so if that means the guests are "inconvenienced"....who cares. When are they leaving????Posted 10-01-2009 at 09:20 AM by MomNC

Thanks, ladies!! They fly out on Saturday night. MIL needs to be driven back to her house which is about two hours from here (Four hours roundtrip). Dh is going to have to insist that his sister is the one to take her (even though she is going to pitch a fit), but our plate is just too full. To top things off, dh leaves on a week-long business trip Monday.Posted 10-01-2009 at 10:25 AM by bandit
