Pap Results - ASCUS???

Hi YaYas,

Last week I did a routine Pap with my OB/GYN. He just called me to say my results came back with ASCUS, which is an acronym for atypia squamous cells of undetermined significance. He said he isn't worried about this and wants me to repeat the test in 6 months. My concern is that this is my second time having this. I had abnormal results about three years ago as well. Last time they had me repeat the test sooner, but I was also cycling then. From what I have read it could be any kind of infection that I don't even know I have.
Anyone here have these results before (multiply??) I am just wondering if I should be nervous about it, he didn't seem to be though . . .

Soooo common, hon! When I was doing individual medical underwriting I cannot tell you how often I saw this. Repeat tests were the standard protocol; usually they were negative and then we accepted the person for insurance. And believe me, if there was ANY chance of a problem the insurance company would NOT have accepted them!

((hugs))

Very common. Don't stress over it. Make sure you load up on your folic acid. Take at least 600mcg to 800mcg daily. That helps repair any "defects" of the cervix.

How do I know this??? I've had the same results several times....then one doctor (who actually BELIEVES in wholistic health) told me to start taking folic acid and guess what......normal paps ever since.....

pg mentioned

Lori I have had that abnormal pap ascus for 2 years now. My ob said it was fine because I tested negative for the HPV virus whatever that is. I was supposed to repeat mine in July but since I am pregnant he said not to worry about it till Janurary. The only reason is the test hasn't changed for 2 years and always comes back the same. I wouldn't worry about it at least they are watching you closely just in case in turns into something else they will be able to catch it early and fix the problem.

I'd always had normal paps up until the pap before my 1st IVF (of course!) which came back with that result. Standard protocol is to retest in a few months, but b/c I was doing IVF, my GYN did a colposcopy and biopsied a few of the inflamed cells (don't recommend that unless absolutely necessary - ouch!). Definitely retest before doing one of those! Everything came back fine and all my paps since have been normal. Later on, I figured out that I had my HSG a few days before my pap as I was trying to squeeze everything in and I have a feeling that it is what caused the inflamed cells.

If you're really worried, maybe ask if you can do it again in 3 months instead of 6? Don't know what insurance would say to that, though.

THis has happened to me too, twice in fact. It is hard to not get worried, but MOST of the time the next PAP comes back normal. They just make you come again in 6 months instead of a year, just as your Dr has done. (BOth times for me, the second one came back normal and I was good for another year)
