Reading Olympics are over . .

Thanks everyone that posted on my Happy Monday Morning thread about the reading program.

I started this program in our area bout 7 years ago and we began with about 40 kids that were interested. In those 7 years it has grown to 254 kids this year!! It involves seven school districts in our are, and it is a great way to increase literacy and the joy for reading.

The kids all get a reading list of high quality books in Oct. They then have about eight weeks to read seven of the 25 books. IF they do that and fill out a journal they make it on a team. THen in March all the teams compete locally and the winners then meet up with the winners of the other school districts. The community has really come together and we had enough door prize donations this year that ALL 254 kids got a door prize!!

The only drawback (sadly) to the competition is usually the parents. They kids have a blast but the parents do all the complaining. BUT, for the first time this year, the only complaint from a dad ( get this one, he wanted to see an administrator for this mistake) was that his son's name was spelled wrong on his certificate of participation!!! LOL

Thanks again, now I can really kick back and focus on teaching for the next two months!!!

Great job, Lori! I think it is unfortunate when parents make these projects "their own", losing sight of what the goal truly is.

I also participate in a reading program at a local hospital for ill children called "Read to Heal". It's amazing to me to watch these teeny-tiny childrens' faces light up when someone reads them a story...for a moment in time, their illnesses are put on the back burner and these kids can simply be *kids*.

As a teacher, your work is invaluable! I wish this profession would get the financial support it so lacks and the critical acclaim it richly deserves.
