High beta's w/ singleton??
I am currently 5w6d pregnant. My beta's have been as follows:
11dpo 61 15dpo 386 24dpo 18,200 These averaged a 36-38hr max doubling time. I had an ultrasound yesterday due to some slight spotting (RE thinks it's from the progesterone gel I am using, no bleeding was seen during my scan). The sac measured 5w6d and we were able to see the baby with a "flicker" but the baby was too small to get a heart rate. Anyway, I am very concerned about the super high betas with a singleton. My RE said that we could possibly see a second baby at my next ultrasound on the 23rd, but it seems strange that it wouldn't show up or would have been missed at my scan yesterday (???). The RE said high numbers can sometimes mean a problem with the pregnancy, but he said the flicker we saw was reassuring. I'm really worried about these high numbers. I am thrilled with just one baby, but not being able to explain the high numbers is driving me crazy! ![]() My other two successful pregnancies had betas that were just short of doubling in 48 hours, so this is very different for me. Any advice/experiences would be appreciated! Thanks!

Living Child mentioned
My betas with my youngest are as follows:
13dpIUI - 126 20dpIUI - 3377 27dpIUI - 18203 Yours don't seem so far off. We also saw a flicker early at 5+ weeks. At 7 weeks we saw a beautiful heartbeat. Congratulations! Please update when you can.

Hi, my betas are pretty high too. I am 6w2d pregnant now but no u/s yet. You can see my betas in my signature line. I too wonder if I have twins or a singleton because I see many moms of twins post their betas in this or lower range.
High betas CAN sometimes be an indication of other problems (such as a molar pregnancy), but in my opinion yours aren't that high. If you were able to see a flicker, it's a very good sign. Hang in there until your next u/s; I know it's really hard to wait... I'm still waiting for my first u/s!! |

Thanks, ladies!! I will definitely update after my next ultrasound. I can tell you that I have had a LOT more nausea this time, which I'm assuming is from the higher hcg.
I'm crossing my fingers for one healthy baby - I've had complications with my past singletons, so I don't think my body can handle more than one! superclam-- I hope your first ultrasound goes perfectly! Let me know if you end up with two in there.

Suburbanmama - great news! congrats.
I only have one too, and I am currently 8w5d. I am debating about the screening vs the diagnostic tests because I am 40, and I have a 1:110 chance of a Down syndrome pregnancy. I heard that Down syndrome causes high HCG levels, so I am worried, since my HCG levels were very high too. I am so ill all the time too... |

hello. new to the board here. my beta is really high as well. On 18dpiui, my beta was 2078 and progesterone was 52. On 20dpiui, was about 10,000.

Mrs A -- congrats on your pregnancy. Those are higher than mine! Maybe twins?
Suburbanmama - forgot to ask you if your dr said anything about the high betas... I had my first prenatal appointment with a nurse practitioner this morning. She acknowledged that Down syndrome results in high betas, but didn't comment on whether mine were high enough to be of concern. I didn't ask her point blank either since there is really no way of knowing at this stage (9w). So I am just going to patiently wait for the first blood screening and the nuchal translucency scan at the end of this month. |

My RE said there is a VERY weak association with high betas and down syndrome, but I have read that the high numbers are measured AFTER the first trimester. So, if your betas are abnormally high beyond the normal timeframe, then it would be a concern. Betas normally peak at 8-10 weeks and then start to decline.
I'm not going to worry about it, because there is such a WIDE range of normal, and our numbers here are within that range, albeit the high end.

I am also worried about my high betas and association with down syndrome. I have been googling info. on this, but it is hard to find specifics. I dont really want to do the amnio. or CVS, so I was thinking of doing the quad. bloodworks and ultrasound. My beta 14dpt/19dpo was 2003 and at 26dpo was 22,000. My ultrasounds showed a singleton. Also, I am 36 years old.
