Low betas give it to me straight
Ok so this is our 3rd medicated IUI. The first one resulted in twin blighted ovums back over the Christmas holidays that took me 12 weeks to miscarry naturally. The 2nd was a bust and our 3rd has resulted in another positive. However I am in Beta Hell right now and I am so afraid that this is going to be a chemical. I started testing on 9 dpiui (11 dptrigger) with very faint lines that continued to be faint up until my 1st beta on 12 dpiui that came back as a 16. My 2nd beta at 15 dpiui was only 28. I was wondering if since they tested me so early on the 1st one that some of the trigger could have still been in the system making it higher than it would have been just from the pg? I am pretty sure I implanted around 10 or 11 dpiui due to cramping and I had some brown spotting at 16 dpiui. I have my 3rd and possibly final beta tomorrow morning. The only symptoms I have are very thirsty and I wake up with cotton mouth every morning some slight nausea and I am tired. I was having sore bbs and some crampiness but that is gone. With my 17 yr old DD I had no symptoms until 7-8 wks pg but with my BO twins I was overloaded with symptoms from day one. My beta started off at 162 on 14 dpiui though so it was much higher. Oh and I ran out of HPTs but the last one I took Friday afternoon (2nd beta was Thursday morning) was an Answer early and it was pretty dark positive.
Any opinions? 12 dpiui beta 16 prog 65 15 dpiui beta 28 prog 75

donna, straight, your betas aren't good, but wait till tomorrow, they could start going along normally. my first ivf, i had a chemical, this one, my numbers are low, but doubling properly. i have done so much reading about beta numbers and other peoples beta numbers that i learned 2 things. 1. its always nice to have good rising numbers for some peace of mind and 2. good rising numbers sometimes have problems and poorly rising numbers sometimes are good pregnancies. so hope for the best. good luck tomorrow. let us know how you make out.

Trinity thanks so much for your reply. I have been scouring the boards trying to find any positive stories that mirror my situation but they have been few with many more ending in mc. I am 40 yrs old so I know my eggs are fragile but I keep telling myself that it is positive that I am getting pg with IUI (we have male factor infertility). We have no insurance coverage so we can't afford IVF so IUI is it for us. I keep praying that my numbers tomorrow will be outstanding but then I say to myself that I am just setting myself up for the fall. We havent told anyone this time and so I have no one to talk to.
I do wanna say thank you though to everyone on the board as reading all your stories has made me not feel so alone! |

donna, getting pg at 40 is good... i'm 39. keep trying if this isn't the one for you. my first one, my RE said that it was positive that I got pregnant because at least it means I can get pregnant. he said we just have to get the right egg. you'll find a lot of stories and a lot of support on these boards. i know i have. good luck

Yeah my RE didn't think we would have any success with IUI and pushed us to go straight to IVF what with my age but we just couldn't do it financially. I was 39 1/2 when I got pg with the first IUI as I just turned 40 last month. I keep thinking it is positive, too that I am getting pg now just finding the one that will stick. After 15 yrs of dealing with secondary IF it is tough to get pg only to mc. My DH didn't come around to doing IUIs until he finally realized that it wasn't going to happen any other way so we lost a lot of time trying naturally to overcome MF. I didn't realize how common it was to mc as no one else in my family has had one or even any trouble getting pg. I have 14 nieces and nephews by my 1 sis and 3 SILs. They can just look at their DHs and get pg. It has been hard to deal with.
Thanks and good luck to you, too! I will come back tomorrow and post my beta good or bad. |

Well we had a power outage during the night and I overslept and I didn't make it to get my beta done before work this morning. I don't think it is going to matter though as I went last night and got another answer early to use this morning before the test to be prepared for the results and it was stark white negative. Not even a squinter. With my last beta only being 28 and the test registering 25 I am pretty sure that means I am out and this was a chemical. I am cramping some as well. So I have a call into the RE's office to see what they want me to do. Oh well. I guess on a positive note at least it won't take me until 12 wks to mc again and then have to wait the 3 months before getting the clearance to do another medicated cycle. Having to do that last time wasted 5 months!

Believe it or not I am ok. I guess after seeing the hb in one of my twins that then stopped and turned into what they called a blighted ovum the last time and fetal poles in both I learned not to become attached until I was "out of the woods" so to speak. When we lost the first one it was bad but ok because we still had the twin but then when the hb was lost after seeing it the week before it crushed me. And it was 3 days before Christmas when we found out they were both now lost. It was most probably the worst Christmas I have ever had. So this time I didn't let myself get too excited or attached which is a shame really but for my own sanity necessary. Now with two pg losses in a row I guess it will be that way for us from now on if we are blessed enough to get pg a 3rd time.
I am sure that it will set in and I will be depressed once af starts but for now it wasn't really real if that makes sense. Trinity good luck to you! I am sending tons of sticky baby dust your way and I wish you the best in your pg! |

Ok so the RE's office just called and they tell me not to stop taking the progesterone until I get a repeat beta as the pg test I took could have been faulty. They don't think from Friday night (since I got a really positive test Friday night) to this morning is long enough for my hcg to have dropped so low to get a snow white test. Plus I am having no bleeding and I do still have some symptoms although mild. So I will be going in the morning to have the test to confirm what I am already pretty sure is another loss. I will update once I have the numbers.

My last beta on 7/21/09 was negative so it was a chemical pregnancy. The RE wants to do some immune testing and other bloodwork now to see if there is any reason other than my age that could be causing the problem especially since I am getting pg pretty easily but just not able to maintain the pg. I don't know if I hope they find something or not. So now just waiting on the dreaded AF to show so that we can get the one rest cycle over and try again.
