Beta going up slowly, is it viable or not?

Hi Ladies,

Wow, I'm confused!

In England they don't tend to do beta tests unless there is some reason for it - and since CD28 (the day I "officially" found out I was pregnant) I've been having a lot of pain (very sharp middle-of-uterus pain, which was explained as possibly a small uterus expanding and also pain on my left-hand-side) so they decided to do some betas.

My GP sent me to hospital to rule out an ectopic pregnancy, which was now 2 weeks ago and they still can't rule it out. I've had 6 betas which go like this:

29/07: 383 (4w3d)
31/07: 462 (not a double, but this could be due to a lab mistake - not sure)
02/08: 899 (double if the 462 number is correct)
07/08: 3935 (5 days later, it is a double)
09/08: 5187 (not a double)
12/08: 7033 (3 days later, should've been 15,500)

The first doctor I spoke to about the non-doubling between the 3935 and the 5187 said she didn't think it was viable. I was prepared for that, but as they can't tell me whether I'm ectopic or not (an early scan at 5w4d wasn't clear as to where the sac was - either outside or inside the womb and was too early for any signs of viability), they are still monitoring me, because a slowly rising beta is still a sign of an ectopic.

When I got today's result I was absolutely amazed when a different doctor said that sometimes betas don't double, but which go up slowly can result in viable pregnancies.

Everything I've read shows that slowly rising betas, especially when they are *this* slow rising, aren't viable. But I don't want to rely on speculation alone, does anyone have any ideas?

I have a 2nd scan in 2 days time, when I'll be 6w5d, and apparently they should be able to see a heartbeat and something *in* the sac if there is anything in there.

It's been such a hassle getting to this point, and now I'm totally confused, and have been for the last 2 weeks. Any input would be greatfully received.

Thanks,
Tiredeyes

Betas always slow down around this time. See the chart at the website below..

I wouldn't be giving up hope yet. I think that your numbers could definitely indicate a viable pregnancy. I am excited to hear what you see on your scan on Thursday. I think that you will see something good!
