Beta numbers/rising fast
My beta numbers more than quadrupled in 48 hrs.
13dpiui - 185 15dpiui - 767 Is this something I should be concerned with? What is a molar pregnancy? Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I got this off the internet - I hope this is not what you have. Why would you think that?
A molar pregnancy happens when you have an abnormality in the fertilized egg at conception. The fertilized egg either never develops into an embryo (this is called a complete mole) or it develops abnormally and can't survive (this is a partial mole). In normal pregnancies, the fertilized egg contains 23 chromosomes from the father and 23 from the mother. In most complete molar pregnancies, the fertilized egg contributes no maternal chromosomes and the chromosomes from the father's sperm are duplicated, so you end up with two copies of chromosomes from the father and none from the mother. In this case, there's no embryo, amniotic sac, or any normal placental tissue. Instead, the placenta forms a mass of cysts. In most partial molar pregnancies, the fertilized egg has the normal complement of chromosomes from the mother but double the chromosomes from the father, so there are 69 chromosomes instead of the normal 46. (This can happen when chromosomes from the sperm are duplicated or when two sperm fertilize the same egg.) In this case, there's some normal placental tissue among the cluster-like mass of abnormal tissue. The embryo does begin to develop, so there may be a fetus (or just some fetal tissue or an amniotic sac), but even if a fetus is present, it's so abnormal that it can't survive except in very rare cases. |

I guess my first questions is did you do IVF, IUI, etc.? How many embryos did you tf or how many follies did you have? These #'s look like a possible multiple pg.

I agree with Theresa. I think multiples are a lot more likely than a molar pg. Then again you just never know. There are plenty of women with quick rising betas with healthy singletons. Between my first and second betas I was doubling every 30 hours and was freaked out about multiples. However its just a singleton. Bottom line is until you have an ultrasound you won't really know.

Thanks so much for the advice. I think it was just initial shock. The doctor says he is not the least bit concerned about eptopic or anything else. I am having a sonogram on Thurs. So I guess I will know then if it is a singleton or mult.
TRC - I had an 2 IUI's 24 hrs apart. I had one follicle at 23 and one at 18 when I triggered. So I guess there is a possibility the second caught up. I have just decided to stay positive. I guess when you try so hard to conceive you just really worry about something going wrong. Thanks so much for all the posts. |

I am preg w/ 2nd child. Daughter is 10 years old. I am only 5 weeks and am into maternity clothes. My beta at 20 dpo was 98 and at 22 dpo was 426. I have read that a doubling time of 22 hours could mean multiples. I have an ultrasound on 7/25 (11 more days, forever, I am going nuts). I did not show until 5 months last time. Husband and myself have no twins in famillies. And this is natural, no IVF or other. What do you guys think?

tsimpson,
I posted to you on the other thread. Congrats on the pg!!!! Your numbers seem in line with a single pg - although beta numbers are not always a good indication. Mine were (single pg) 15 dpo - 235 18 dpo - 698 25 dpo - 10,468 Go to www. betabase.info and you can see where you numbers fall on averages. Good luck with the u/s! Christie |

Hi -- That doesn't look like such a shocking jump. There is a huge range of beta numbers and they are supposed to double every 48-72 -- that doesn't mean it's bad if they go up faster.
Plus you know, no one does all these millions of betas on non-IF patients, for all we know those numbers are the norm in the fertile population. Congrats and good luck!

Hey there! Congrats on your pregnancy. Your beta is definitely increasing quickly, but from what I have heard about molars, it is more extreme... like quickly jumping into the 10,000-50,000's, although I am certainly no authority on this one.
I do know that more than doubling in 48 hours is supposed to be a possible indicator of multiples, but mine did not double in 48 hrs with my current pregnancy and it is seemingly healthy triplets. My RE says that betas are fairly unreliable and that the important thing is that it does not sky rocket (which I don't think yours have) or increase by less than 60% every 48 hours. Good luck and congrats again! Isabella |
