surprise preg, question about your experiences with beta levels and u/s
Jumping in here with a quick question!
My 4 yr old is result of long years of treatment. However this week I found out I was pregnant the old fashioned way...VERY much a surprise. With my history of ectopics I knew I needed to be seen asap because I don't have any idea when my LMP was. We've moved (military family) and I don't see the same doctor we saw when I had my son. That being said, my betas and u/s were as follows: 6/15: 1207 6/17: 2660 and u/s showed what she thought was a gestational sac in the uterus Of course it's been a LONG time since I've asked any questions about betas and gestational sacs and what we should see, etc....I'm still so flabbergasted that I'm pregnant with no treatment that I didn't really ask any questions today. ![]() The doc is not an RE and she said with their equipment, their cutoff is a 2500 beta in order to see anything. Does this all sound right to you all? Shouldn't we have seen more with a beta of 2660 or can the equipment really make that much difference? I seem to remember my RE saying we should see stuff after beta reaches 1000. Am I remembering wrong or is it just a matter of my RE having better u/s machine? I go back next Friday and I'm praying we see things have developed correctly...but that's a looooong week away from now. Thanks in advance for any advice...I'm trying to just enjoy this surprise but pevious losses never leave your memory and I'm jus tlooking for any encouragement I can get! TIA! Maddy

Hi Maddy,
Whether you see something on the ultrasound is more a matter of how far along you are. One week you may not see a heartbeat but the next you may. Beta numbers have a very big range. If you look on the beta board you can find a link to a chart and see the range. Your beta did double and that is great. Just to give you an idea my 1st beta was 4069 and 2 days later it was 8067. I am only about 3 weeks to 1 month along and I won't have an ultrasound until the end of June or beginning of July. My due date is Valentines day 2006. With my dd my beta was 1118 at 1 month and 10 923 at 5 weeks. Oh yeah, this was also a suprise for us as well. My dd turned 1 on June 6th and I got a positive hpt on June 7th. It took several years to conceive dd so we weren't bothering to be careful. What a wonderful surprise. Congratulations. Hang in there for that second ultrasound. I'll be watching for your post. Sheri

Maddy,
I had my first u/s around 5w (my beta #s were around 4400) and all we could see at that point were the gestational and yolk sacs. I'm not an expert but your results seem normal to me. Congratulations! Genevieve
