Baby's Heartbeat Rate and Baby's Sex
I've been told that as far as heartbeats and the sex of a child goes, boys heartbeats tend to be on the low end, and girls heartbeats tend to be on the high end.
Although, if I understand correctly, one heartbeat rating is not enough to say boy or girl. It needs to be consistently on the low end, or consistently on the high end. Anyone heard of this, or have any experience with this? Just curious. Good luck to you all. (5/9 - 1st U/S @ 6wk4da, baby heartrate (seen & heard) 120 beats per minute.) SUAL

I have heard of this. I have 3 ds's and a dd. I had 2 ds's that ranged from 154-160. Didn't work with me. And you are supposed to look at the bpm when you are later in the pg, not so early.

Somebody mentioned "it's a boy" when I posted my baby's heartbeat of 118. So, I did my research and this is what I found:
This belief is based on the fact that women usually have higher metabolic rates than men and, therefore, have a slightly higher pulse rate. Actually, there is no correlation between fetal heart rate and gender -- and it has been studied. This is an "old wive's tale" that will not die. Having said that, it is fun to try to guess gender based on heart rate, and because we have no other ways of doing this (short of amniocentisis and ultrasound), it is harmless enough. You will find, too, that as gestation advances and your baby's neurological system matures, the heart rate will slow a bit. So, it looks like we all start out female, which genetically happens to be true. Oli |

Thanks Ladies for your responses. Oli, I had one of the physicians I work with confirm that it's really an "old wise tale". (The post from experienced Moms confirms it too.) He said he has seen boys heartrates 160-170+ and girls 120-140. So you just have to wait and see at the sex determination ultrasound. Sometimes, u/s is not 100% accurate, but pretty accurate most of the time. Over the years, it's been perfected. Whatever it is, I am glad to be on my way to being a Mommy, and I will be happy with whatever God allows me to have. Just want it to be healthy. Thanks again. Good luck to you all. SUAL

As an L&D nurse I have heard many a baby's heartbeat, sometimes it holds true, sometimes not
They are all typically faster in the beginning, and all slow a little towards the end. I like "guessing" around 28-34 weeks Jenn |
