Need opinions/reassurance on these betas & u/s result
Hi,
This is my first post to this board after lurking for awhile. I'm 37 with no previous pregnancies and have had 4 IUI's w/ BFN's. On to IVF#1. ER was on 4/4. One 6d blast was transferred on 4/10 and I spotted very light pink for 3 days starting 4/21. Betas are: 4/21 - 20 4/24 - 36 4/27 - 228 5/5 - 877 Ultrasound today showed a sac only, no heartbeat. RE is was concerned, but after beta today wants me to come back next week for another u/s. Do you think the end is near or maybe this is a late implanter??? All of this is driving me crazy, plus I have a work related conference to fly to late next week. Don't know if I should be going to it.

Hi,
It does seem a little early to see a heartbeat but I'm not sure about your beta numbers. I'm wondering if there was a lab error on the 5-5 draw because the numbers really jumped between the 4-24 and the 4-27 tests. Will your doctor do a repeat beta? At least they have ruled out an ectopic pregnancy so you don't have to worry about that. Also, do you know if the sac measurements correlated with how far along you think you are? Please keep me posted. Genevieve

Genevieve,
Thanks for your reply. I think RE will do another beta when I go in for another u/s next week. He did say that the sac should be three times the size that it is now w/ hb, which it has neither. He took measurements, but I can't remember the specifics. But he was surprised about this last beta jump which is why he wants me to come in for U/S, so he can rule things out I guess. I am thinking it was a late implanter and could be viable or it is a blighted ovum. I'm trying not to dwell on it to much though and don't seem as down about it today as I was yesterday. My body is playing tricks on me... Tonia |

Hi, just came across your post, and had just read on a beta board that the beta usually has to be 1200 to see sac/fetus and 6000 to see heartbeat. Don't know the total truth in this, but thought I would pass it on to give some encouragement

Yep, beta has to be above 1,000 to see sac and over 6,000 before you can see a heartbeat. We saw a sac with yolk sac at my 5 week u/s, and finally a fetal pole with a heartbeat at 7 weeks. Don't give up hope. There are all kinds of possibilities.
Hugs

I think your US was way to early
As for your numbers don't worry about the actual number it varies for each women what is important is that it is doubling every 48to 36 hours. Relax did your re put you on progesterone? If no than he should Good luck |

My RE did an early u/s on me on Monday. When he called me later to tell me that my #3 beta was 1100, he said that that explains why we didn't see a sac...your beta needs to be atleast 1500 before you can see anything.
Hope that yours is a late implanter! Best of luck! |

Hi All,
Thank you all for your replies and words of encouragement, but it was not to be. I went for an u/s on 5/12, the sac was bigger, but no h/b. RE said stop progest shots, I started spotting the next day. It's been very bad at times with cramping and still going on. I went for a follow up beta on 5/20 and beta was up to 1877. Then an u/s on 5/21 to rule out ectopic. I have another beta for 5/24 to see if beta will start dropping, if not, then I think D&C will be next. We'll try again in July or Aug since I'm in the shared risk program and have few more tries left...
