high hcg, rising but not doubling

on 3/9 i had an hcg at 5 weeks and the number was 13,000.
on 3/16 I had a repeat test done at 6 weeks (on and off spotting) and it was 54,000.
The doctor's office says if the only number they had was the 54,000 at 6 weeks, they wouldn't think twice about it, but because of the previous number they were concerned that it wasn't doubling every two days so I was "borderline" and we would do an ultrasound at 7 weeks.
I've read that higher levels double more slowly, but the numbers are so high i don't know whether to be excited about the possibility of twins, or worried about a molar pregnancy.

Any thoughts would be so appreciated, i'm going a little stir crazy waiting.
