Please help me end this nightmare! Please help me...
Hi there,
I am hoping that you ladies can help me. It seems that nobody can answer my questions and I am so stressed and worried that something is very wrong. I am not eating, sleeping, or working. I just can't function right now. I had blood drawn at 10 dpo, 12 dpo and 14 dpo because of bleeding. Respectively, my beta numbers were 124, 484, and 1580. This a doubling time of 24 hours or four times the normal doubling time. Can you please tell me if this is normal? I've read that high hcg levels can indicate that I am having a molar pregnancy, or a downs syndrome baby, or possible cancer complications. An ultrasound on 15 dpo confirmed the presence of a sac. My physician has told me just to wait and see what happens. An ultrasound is scheduled for March 1st, when I will be 7.5 weeks pregnant. Is there nothing that can be done to tell me sooner what is happening? I have read that twins have an elevated hcg level but the doubling time should be normal. I can only find literature on hcg levels not doubling within the 48 hours. I want to know what a doubling time of 24 hours would indicate? Have you ever heard of this? Do you think that a level of hcg 14dpo being 1580 is outrageously high? With so much that is most likely wrong with this pregnancy, and nobody has said that it could be normal I am contemplating a termination. I just feel like I have nobody to talk to about this. Nobody seems to know what to say. _________________

I am sos orry you are going through this! I would not go for termination just yet. There are so many reasons WHY thsi could be happening. I iwll not minimize the risks, as I have heard of all these before. I have heard of Beta's that high at 14 days...and they all resulted in multiple pregnancies. I also know they double faster at first than as the pregnancy gets stronger. (They get slower as time goes.) SO, I would wait for the u/s to see what you see. Take a deep breath and relax...it could all be alright. You need to keep a positive outlook for that baby...
Hugs, Heather

I would ask for an earlier u/s. I had very high numbers that early and they were tripling (!!!) not doubling and they were doing it every 30 hours. Even after the levels hit 20,000 they were still tripling but it was every 50 hours. It's supposed to be 96 hours. When I had my u/s they found 2 sacs and eventually at 7 1/2 weeks the 2nd one was gone. They called it a vanishing twin and apparently it's very common. That explained my increased morning sickness that suddenly went away also. The 2nd sac was measuring only 4-5 weeks when the other one was 6 1/2 weeks with a heartbeat. So your numbers are very good. My friend had a molar pregnancy and those numbers are like 50,000 when they should be 5,000 as an example. Please do not end the pg when it could be a good one. I would call and ask for an earlier u/s. Best wishes and Hugs!

Oh thank you thank you! I have looked and looked and couldn't find any information anywhere on just how high numbers were to indicate a molar pregnancy! My only other concern is downs syndrome and there is none in our families and I'm only 29. Hopefully this isn't the case!
I am not looking for twins, I have a 2 year old am just looking for that number 2 baby to complete our family. If it is twins and they're healthy, I'll take them! LOL Thanks SO much for answering! I was hoping to find somebody who had been in the same situation. Maybe I'll sleep tonight!!

Some people see a HB early, but i belive 7 weeks is the rule. My RE won't do one until 7 weeks.

I also wanted to lend my support. You're doing just fine! Please don't contemplate termination just due to your beta numbers. I had really high beta numbers at the beginning of this pregnancy...2,756 at 19dpo. I had had an IUI with 2 mature follicles, had taken the HCG shot so both released, and I just knew that it was twins, even felt both implantation nudges when they happened. About 1.5 weeks later, before my first ultrasound, one morning I woke up and just knew I had lost one but was still pregnant with the other. When they did my 1st ultrasound, they saw 1 baby and a couple of subchorionic hemhorrages, cause unknown, that might have been from a baby dying and reabsorbing. Anyway, the reason for the story is that there are any number of reasons why your betas are higher. You could very well have twins, for example. Beta ranges are a guideline, not a hard-&-fast rule. Otherwise there are lots of healthy, live babies on the Parenting boards that never would have made it from betas being "too high" or "too low".
If you can, hold off until 7 weeks for your ultrasound. That way you'll be more assured of seeing the heartbeat than at 6 weeks, when they still may or may not. Then you'll just have another reason to worry, when waiting 1 extra week until 7 weeks would have soothed your fears. Please fill us in after your first ultrasound! |
