Marginal Previa- Hospital Bedrest.

21 Days ago, I had my first bleed. By the time I made it to the doctor (an hour away) the red blood had turned brown and they did an U/S, monitored me for the day and sent me home on modified bedrest.

10 days after, I had my second bleed. This one was much more than the first and got me admitted into the hospital. After 3 days they were considering sending me home on bedrest, but I bled again 1 hour before discharge.

I've been here ever since. It's hard for me now because the bleeding has stopped. But their fear is, until the placenta moves that because I've bled three times the chances of a major bleed are higher. That and possibly because i live so far away. So my question is, have you been through something like this are are you in the same situation? Did it move? I have an ultrasound in one week, at which time they'll decide whether I'm going home.

OK..hope to hear about it getting better...but would like to hear any/all scenarios.

How many weeks gestation are you? I'm asking because that makes a huge difference. A marginal previa is very common in the early 2nd trimester and most of them move up well in time for delivery. I had one like that in my last pg (=it moved), and in fact my drs said that they do not consider it a "real" previa unless it is there at delivery (which of course does not mean it could not cause bleeding problems); I was not hospitalised despite of some bleeding (but I live within 10 minutes drive from the hospital and in any case it is a big center with 80% high risk pregnancies so they only hospitalise the most serious cases). If you are in your third trimester, then the moving becomes less likely, but normally the only major "complication" you will have is that you will have to have a c/s (which you might have had anyway for some other reason).

I am currently 24.5 weeks with twins. I had a low lying placenta and had heavy bleeding at 14 weeks and for several weeks after that. The bleeding was bright red and very very heavy. I was put on modified bedrest and bedrest for a few days. As of the u/s at 22 weeks the placenta had moved up and totally resolved itself. Both babies are doing great and are healthy and happy. I am still on pelvic rest and modified activities but only because it is a twin pg. GL to all of you!

Hi Tampa mom!! Are you in St Joe's? They are wonderful there....I was there a couple weeks when my cervix thinned to nothing (years ago!)

In my second pg I had previa and they thought that into the 3rd trimester it might resolve, and I was told most do....but not mine. I was also on blood thinners for another problem and they were very afraid of a bleed, however, I never did have a bleed (although I was terrified of it!). They wound up taking him at 35 weeks via c-section because of that and other problems.

It may resolve for you, it may not, but because of the seriousness of the problem you are in the ....

DUH....I just realized how old this post is!! LOL!!!!

low lying placenta...spotting, contractions, bedrest

This thread is kind of old, so I don't know if anyone is still reading it, but it was helpful for me to read about everyone's experiences. I'm 16 weeks and was in the ER for bleeding and contractions 2 days ago. I am at home now on strict bedrest. My low lying placenta is touching my cervix. I'm hoping that as my uterus and placenta grow, it will move away from the cervix a bit.

Complete previa moved to marginal

Hi! I thought I'd post this to give you a little hope. I found out at 20 wks that I had a posterior complete previa. My doctor put me on pevic rest and modified bed rest as well. I had another ultrasound at 28 weeks and the complete previa is now a marginal one. I have had no bleeding so far... I have another ultrasound at 32 weeks to see if it has moved. If it has not by that point, my doctor reccommends c-section at 36 weeks just in case I go into preterm labor. One thing I would suggest is to get the steriod shots (it is a series of 2 in 24 hours) to develop the baby's lungs in case they have to take your child early. I did this last week. The shots are painful but worth it if your little one comes early. (I'm sure your doctor has already informed you of this...)

Good luck!
