Another OPK question
I have a question hopefully someone can help me out with. I have been using the digital OPK's since CD10, today is CD 11 - once at noon and the other around 8pm. I took 150mg of Clomid cd3-cd7. Today my temp was 98.6 and I got a positive OPK at noon but at 8pm it was negative. Is this normal? Also, I have been having a lot of cramping. My problem is that my doctor scheduled my IUI for tomorrow. My doctor does not do u/s. Is that going to be too late? Thanks in advance.

Hi there: So, you just started yesterday at cd 10 and it was negative, but today was positive only at noon? Was the IUI scheduled based on the positive OPK? Your temp of 98.6 seems like a post-O temp to me. I think if your temp tomorrow is in that same range, I would talk to your doctor about the timing, to see what he/she thinks about going ahead with the IUI. Once you have ovulated, the egg sticks around for about 12-24 hours.
The other thing to keep in mind is that many women on Clomid ovulate later than usual. Cd 10-11 seems really early to me. I wish your doctor could do a quick progesterone test to see whether you have already ovulated! I'm sorry I couldn't be more definitive. Good luck and let us know how you make out. ++++++++++ Maura |

Thanks for the response. Yes my temp was 98.6 again today and negative OPK. I talked to the doctor and she went ahead with the iui. She told me that it should still be ok since the sperm doesn't have to travel far. She said thats the problem with a low reserve. I don't know - I don't have very much hope. Am I better off going straight to IVF?

alicat...i would run through a few cycles of clomid before resorting to IVF. an u/s would be most helpful. especially in your situation where you seem to be O'ing much earlier than is typical for clomid users. does your doc give a reason for not doing them, or is the equipment not available?

She doesn't really give me a reason for not doing u/s. Before I started clomid I had a 28 day cycle now for the past couple of months on clomid it has been around 26 days. Her explanation is that is why the early O and no reason for the u/s since I get a +opk. It just seems the timing is always off and maybe IVF would be the way to go....I am getting older by the minute. Thanks.

it does make perfect sense that if you O early, your cycle will end early. the LP of your cycle is most important. as long as it's the follicular phase that's gotten shorter and not the LP, then you're good. it just seems so unusual for a clomid user to be O'ing so early.
the real purpose of the u/s is to determine the size in mms of the follie. a good size follie is anywhere from 17/18mms yo 21/22mms. if your follical(s) isn't maturing to fertilization size than the whole point of IUI is moot. i think many good docs just incorporate the u/s as a routine part of treatment when taking any kind of meds. clomid is notorious for delaying the avg cd14 O'er to cd 17-22. if your doc is telling you the clomid is causing you to O early...i would be prompted to do some research. i'm sure there are exceptions to that rule, but i would read up on it a little. the more information you're armed with, the more in charge of your own treatment you become.

Alicat... hi!
How have your temps been since the IUI? Have they stayed up? I agree with Dina and clomid normally causing you to O later rather than early. However, anthing CAN happen. When I took clomid it pushed my cycles about 3 days later than normal. Good Luck! |

Hi Ferrit Mommy,
My temps have been up in the 98.5 range other than 1dpiui and 3dpiui which was 98.1 so I don't know I did do an OPK those days and they came out negative. I don't hold out hope for this cycle though. We'll see today is 6dpiui. I haven't had any symptoms other than a noticable amount of CM. Clomid seems to make my cycles shorter if that makes any sense. I was normally 28 days like clockwork and when I went on Clomid it went to 26 days which is why they say I ovulate sooner now. |
