Can HCG Trigger Cause Surge in BBT?

Hi,
I posted this question to another thread, but no answers, so I thought I would post here. Can the HCG trigger (5,000iu) cause a surge in your BBT? I am trying to confirm my ovulation. I had a lot of abdominal pain Friday night 12 hrs after my HCG shot and then Saturday morning my BBT surged - all of these factors seem to indicate that I ovulated on Friday night UNLESS the HCG caused the BBT surge.

For my first cycle, they had me go in for the IUI 36 hrs after the HCG trigger, but I think I ovulated 24 hrs after trigger (because of the pain and the BBT surge the next morning). For my second IUI cycle, they shortened the wait and had me go in 24 hrs after trigger for IUI, but this time I think I ovulated 12 hrs after trigger. If I could confirm that the BBT surge had nothing to do with the HCG trigger, then I can better schedule my next IUI. Thanks!

superclam....i think for the most reliable answer you should of course speak with your doctor, but i believe that the hcg trigger alone should not cause a temp spike. it's the increase in progesterone production that causes the temp rise after O.

are your temps staying up after that increase 24 hours later?

also, if ovulation isn't an issue for you and your doc is having you trigger just for the timing purposes and being able to "schedule" your IUI, that could be a reason why you O so quickly after triggering. it's possible the body is already in the process of O'ing and the trigger just finishes off what nature might have needed another couple of days for.

i wish you much success this cycle!

in the event that this cycle is not successful, maybe you should try an OPK next cycle BEFORE you trigger. if you're already surging before your trigger then that would explain a lot and i would go forward with scheduling your IUIs within 24 hours of triggering.

good luck! keep us posted

Hi superclam and welcome! I agree with Dina about progesterone being the usual culprit to increase temps. But I have also read -- both here and elsewhere -- anecdotes about women seeing a temp spike the day after an HcG shot, without O happening then. In those cases, the temp goes up, but then goes back down to pre-ovulatory levels. I have tried to find a reputable source to confirm, but have not. I did see a reference to the chart gallery on fertilityfriend being helpful (you can apparently look at charts of women who had the shot and see what they look like), but you need a membership to do that (I don't have one, so couldn't look!).

Anyway, just wanted to let you know about that possibility. Good luck getting with the timing -- often the trickiest part!

Best of luck and keep us posted++++++++

Thank you DKNY and Maura for your feedback and other resources. I'll look further. My BBT has sustained, but it's from the progesterone suppositories I am taking. Basically, I had an OPK+ Friday 8/14 morning, so they had me trigger right away with 5,000iu HCG and come in the next morning (Sat 8/15). I had the IUI within 24 hrs of trigger, but it was still after I o'ed. I think my body responds too well to the triggers since I also respond really well to the injectables, so I'll talk to my RE and see if we can lower for the next cycle so that I O closer to IUI time. Keeping my fingers crossed that this 2ww ends positively and I wont even need to have any such conversations with the RE. Thanks again for the feedback.

The silver lining is that you respond really well to injectables ... so perhaps with a little tinkering, you'll get the timing right next time!

Best of luck and keep us posted++++++++
